Is the person at your table? If yes, then sure, ask them to hold off a few minutes. If not, then no. If you are in a smoking section or smoking restaurant, then you have deal with it or leave. Tell the restaurant's manager that they need to change their policy on smokers and you'll return.

Of course if the person is sitting at your table. In a restaurant where they allow smoking if the person isn't at your table then no. You probably shouldn't be sitting in the smoking section. I think it is rude to smoke anywhere indoors nowadays with all we know about the dangers of smoking and second hand smoke. I say this as a smoker who was never comfortable smoking around others who don't smoke. Even before it was banned in restaurants and in bars I would go outside to smoke. It's just common courtesy.

Sure it is.....when u enter an eating establishment together and they ask smoking or none, speak up and say NONE! You have the right to choose as well as the smoker. I hate sitting in a smoke filled rm trying to eat something. Just as many peole die from second hand smoke or didn't u know that. You sound like a none smoker, but if u r constantly inhaling someone elses, u may as well fire up too.

Those smokers out there that do things like that give the rest of the smokers a bad name. I am a smoker and I would never be that rude to someone. It is perfectly ok for you to ask that question. I imagine that person is also rude or inconsiderate in other ways also.

I won't even smoke in my own car if I have a non smoker with me. You have to be considerate of others. Stuff like this even makes me mad....grrrrrr!!! LOL

Have a good day!!!

you didn't say if the person smoking is with you or at another table. If with you then yes you can ask them to stop while your eating ( they should of asked you if you minded before lighting up that's what I always do). If they are at another table you can still ask but more than likely they will still smoke.

As a smoker it doesn't bother me to put out a cigarette if someone is eating or if the smoke is bothering them for any other reason as long as I am asked in a nice manner.

You Know what...I am an occasional smoker and I think it is so rude when someone lites up a cigarette when I am eating. Unless you have told the other person that they may smoke and it doesn't bother you...then they can wait 15-20 minutes.

Sure it is---and in most cases there will be no problem there---it is rare but there are a couple of folks out there that smoke that are extremely offended when asked not to do so---but for the most part most of the people I know who smoke are very compliant about this type of request and are very gracious in their adapting to the comfort zone perimeters of the people around them

In an ideal world I'd say yes, in fact in an ideal world they wouldn't be smoking around other people. But in reality it depends on how big they are and how big you are.

Maybe ask the owner of the restaurant to go non-smoking.
