A group of people getting together to discuss/explore options on a project - basically accomplishing NOTHING - for example see Hurricane Katrina recovery committee.

A group of people, usually elected by a members of an organisation or appointed by government to discuss issues and policy. They have to be organised, so they have rules. To speak, you normally address the chairman or chairwoman (silly people refer to this person as "the chair"). Enough people have to attend meetings of the committee and this is called a quorum. The meeting usually has an agenda before it starts, so everyone knows what is to be discussed. Someone records what is said at the meeting, these are the "minutes" of the meeting. There are other rules and conventions and books that you can get telling you about them! Even your local soccer club, probably has a committee to meet and decide how the club will be run.
