This is a myth and a LIE that muslims tell others.
http://www.bible.ca/islam/islam-myths-fastest-growing.htm
There are more new Christians added to the world population than any other religion on earth every day. This data makes the entire discussion about "rates of growth" irrelevant. The fact is today, that Christianity is the fastest growing religion on this most critical basis. This may change, but today, in 2004 AD, Christians take the prize for being the fastest growing religion.
On none of the 6 continents are Muslims the fastest growing religion.
That Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world is pure myth at best and at worst a deliberate deception of solid statistical facts.

There's no way a religion with over a billion adherents can be the fastest growing religion in the world - the mathematics on that are just not possible.
Here's what I mean - if a man created a religion and then goes to two friends and convinces them to join his religion, then statistically, his religion has just a seen a 200% growth in adherents, in the span of two or three minutes.
I think it goes without saying that Islam could not grow from 1.3 billion to 3.9 billion adherents in a few minutes.
Given what I've just demonstrated, I suspect more marginal religions with higher growth rates (such as Mormonism) probably have a better claim than Islam to the speed-growth crown.
And synthia? I don't buy it. Atheism had its heyday in the 19th century, and has been in decline (in intellect and influence) ever since - certainly YA is a testament to its intellectual decline. If anything, the post Sept. 11 era has seen church attendance and inclination to belief on the incline, from what I've seen.

Its a cut n paste job from another answerer. But interesting facts.
"Fastest : Hum !
1) In 99% of Islamic countries it is illegal to leave Islam...
This means in many instances that you get killed, emprisoned or accused of Apostasy with strong penalties...
Would you tell anyone you left Islam in those circumstances ?
2) Malaysia changed their constitution about 5 to 8 years ago to Sharia Law. Now the state considers all mixed marriages of non muslims or a mislim with non muslims as officially Muslims...
Result: In less than 5yrs, Less than 50% of the population was Muslim, now they claim it's 60%... I am sure you get the picture...
3) Genocides: Sudan, Bengladesh and persecutions of Non-Muslims in Muslim countries is epidemic....(Bengladesh alone might be a loss of about million Hindus...they were 20 to 25% of the population prior to 1973 - Now they are less than 15%.
4) In the USA. Muslim Lobbyist groups have pretty much slowed the pace on that aspect. Actually they stopped when some evangelicals have been able to demonstrate that a very large community of ex-muslim have become Christians in the USA.
They also demonstrated that these lobbyist groups manipulated the numbers... They played the Ethnic game such as caclulating the arab population as Muslim when we know the Arabs in the USA account for 75% as being Christians...
Then these lobbyist groups, always honoring their propagandistic lies would consider mixed families such as a Muslim marriying a Catholic and would then make a household head count including the non-muslim wife, and their children....
Again, if they want to really play the religious competition game;
1) Introduce freedom of religion in Saoudi Arabia.
2) Protect those who leave Islam
3) Protect those who criticise Islam and treat islam like any other religion...
Then these numbers may have meaning...?

I don't think I quite agree with you - May be someone has provided you with wrong figures. From what I know people are moving out not only from Islam but all god based religions. They are more interested in finding the inner peace that lies within them. specially after the chaos that occurred during the past few years as the 9/11 attack, I find it hard to believe that people would wanna become an Islamic.

It is true that Islam is the fastest growing religion, but I will not go to Islam ever. Jesus is not a Prophet, He came here first as a humble servant and will come again as a conquering King at the end of the tribulation (as stated in the Bible). There are going to be extremists in all causes, that's the way things are....

Wow! You mean there are really 125,000 prophets?! No wonder it's so popular! It's a franchise on religious leadership! So I could just claim to be a prophet of Islam and I'll get to have my own mosque, palace, and harem? Sweet! Where do I sign up?
I can see the ad now! "Hum-drum Charles Manson plan of trying to start your own run-of-the-mill god-as-yourself-cult way out of style? ISLAMIFY! That's right, kids, you too can now become a franchise profit of Islam! Err... I mean prophet! With your own ordination into Islamic prophecy, you get to not only scare your neighbors, but present yourself as a more legitimate religious leader than if you started your own home-grown cult! ISLAMIFY! You'll be glad you did!"

The birthrate is the only reason for growth. Your killing practices prevent choices. But they are not entirely successful as many convert everyday. There is proof of that if you search other religions.
Many have thrown off the yoke of tyranny, especially since the computer brings truth to those who can afford one to use in private.
As did the printing press when the bible was coming to the people, so will the computer be to the masses. You can't stop the Christian God Jehovah!

I think I prefer to stay a catholic. But when I go to church, to confession and to pray; I will say a prayer for you. There is one God that is true. So why do people disagree so much about the laws sent by him. We all know right from wrong; it is very simple. A child quickly learns such things. Adults makes excuses for doing wicked things - often in the name of their religion. I do not exclude my own.

According to statistics every one in Iran is a Muslim, that is bullshit. As many Muslims are treated like fodder there is no way of knowing how many are really "of the flock". The other thing of course is that most other revealed religuions are shrinking........that can only be a good thing. "God" gave us reason, not religion.
