You know how "back in the day" they had all of these corny jokes made up by people who had too much time? (Reminds me of the Greeks who invented mathematics, but that's off subject) Well, one day this person decided OK, I'll make up a riddle, to stump the other kids at school. He asked, "Why did the chicken cross the road?" The answer was "to get to the other side". Why does anyone cross a road? The purpose of crossing a road is to get to the other side. The chicken just confused everyone. Since the first occurrance of this joke, the chicken has had more and more reasons to cross the road, like "to get away from Col. Sanders" or to "prove to the possum it could be done". but I believe that it started the same way all the other corny jokes start, with a seed.

I think it originated in China when two monks saw a dumb runaway chicken crossed a dirt road and one asked the other: "Why did the chicken cross the road?"
