I'm 20, 5'10, 185 lbs. I need to lose weight and get fit, but I haven't exercised since Jr. High gym. I don't want to over do it at first, what would you suggest is a good exercise to introduce myself into fitness, just to get me going?

Stretch first and warm up the muscles so you don't risk tearing or straining anything that you like. Stretch when you're done exercising...same reason.

You need to find something you enjoy...ride a bike...walk briskly..add in some light weight work, and go from there.

I started with just making sure I was walking 5 miles a day. Buy a cheap pedometer and make sure you hit 10,000 steps a day. I love weights, but I only allow myself every other day with free weights, because I'd quit the aerobic exercise, and that's where you lose the weight. Very simple and cheap ways of getting started...depending on the $$ available and the time, take up a sport and train for it...or train for a marathon...or decide you want to do some tremendous hike and train for it..even if you never DO those things, you'll have started yourself on a program.

I would agree with the answer about walking and swimming, but would suggest you borrow a book from the library about exercising. Even with walking and swimming, you should stretch first - to warm up your muscles. Any good exercise book should show you the warm up stretches.

Start your walk at about 20-30 minutes a day, or swim at 30-45 minutes, if you have time to exercise daily.

Remember the first thing you lose is water weight, but you may gain first, if the muscles start toning (since muscles weigh more than fat) so don't get discouraged. Measure your circumferences, arms at the biceps, chest, waist, hips and thighs. As you gain muscle mass, you will lose inches, which is part of your goal - and will encourage you if you are gaining or plateaued at times.

Best wishes.

i started with walking. around the block and then on the treadmill at the gym. also started using the weight machines. as i got more comfortable with them i expanded into free weights. just go slow and remember to stretch before, during and after. lighter weights and more repetitions give you more of an aerobic workout which is want you want to burn fat and get toned.

walking is about the least stressful on the body. Swimming is good too.
