Most of it is the large gap between the haves and the have not's. The have's love to blame the have not's, but it was on their backs that they got to where they are. The GAP is widening.
We have other social issues that aren't found as often in other countries. Race is an issue here, immigration is an issue, partly because of racism, especially in the states they migrate to. Ironic that those states used to belong to Mexico until we grabbed them.
The US believes in Punishment, not rehabilitation. We put traffic offenders in jail with rapist and murderer's. A lot of states have sentencing guidelines!
The jails will probably change because the same people crying about why we didn't put criminals away, are the same ones that wont pay for jails when they do. They are always the ones that pull this kind of crap! Now they are releasing people from overcrowded prisons and they are bitching about that as well.
In this country it is hard to be in the melting pot if you aren't a WASP because all the others are easily identifiable!
Education is so expensive now, you will be paying off college loans forever! You can't go anywhere it seems without at least at masters.
Of course, those who are born with silver spoons get automatic seats in Yale, Harvard, Dartmouth and many of the best schools., then they scream when a black person gets admitted under a quota system. They are always cpmplaining about that, but they don't say anything about the other!
Anyway, we seem to have enough issues here, the biggest being our 91 IQ C- Yale graduate! He likes to see how many he can get pissed at us, and then wonders why there is terrorism!

I spent over 30 years in law enforcement, 17 of them working in a maximum security prison. I have thought about this long and hard. I have come to the conclusion that it all began with the social programs we created to help end poverty. Before those programs came into existence, the number of children you had was limited by your ability to provide for them. We have created a system whereby women are rewarded for having children outside of families. You can belabor the point, but pretty much everybody now recognizes that children don't do well in homes without a father. I know that there are exceptions, and I tip my hat to those women that have done so. They are the rare exception. We now have multiple generations of kids who have grown up in this system, and they have a tendency to wind up on the wrong side of the law. What do we do with them? You can't get rid of them by shipping them away or killing them. You can't just let them run around creating havoc. We know that once a person reaches young adulthood, they are pretty much what they are. Rehabilitation sounds wonderful, but only the individual can do it. No human can rehabilitate another human. The cheapest and easiest solution is to remove them from our neighborhoods by putting them in prison. It doesn't help that we have the worst drug laws on earth. Using drugs is not a crime. Didn't we learn anything from Prohibition? Until we return to a more sane and responsible social system, this problem will only get worse. Mark my words.

It is because we have one of the largest populations per ca pita in the western world. If a country has 10% of its population in prison but it has only 100 people that would be 10 people the sheer number of people in the United States makes us have a huge prison population

Unhealthy families. Too many people having too many unwanted children, and then blaming the government for their mistakes, and then hold out their hand for more money.
They do not do anything for themselves, just sit and wait for their money. When the children grow up, mother does not want anything to do with them, so they join a gang. Shoot each other, and then blame the police when they get caught.
I think we have to create a society that needs to take more responsibility for their own actions.
