I would say a combination of things would help memory. Not all are needed maybe just one would work for you.
1) read - reading is relaxing and helps with building the proverbial "brain power"
2) meditation - relaxing helps "clear the head"
3) exercise - a fit body also means a fit mind... or so I'm told.
4) just keep stimulating the brain - many things can do this just have to find the one for you

Chanting a mantra doesn't help improving your memory. Meditation does. And also, training in singing also helps since it involves memorizing lyrics and tunes. Exercising regularly , thus improving blood circulation to your brain helps. And not to mention rehearsing the learning material also helps. Adapting some technique for learning like progressive part learning, (like if you have to memorize 3 pages of a book, you first memorize the first page, then first and second page together, then the 3 pages together.) also helps in retaining a learned material for longer time, that way making sure that the information passes on to the long term memory where it is stored so you can recall it at a later time. Chanting a mantra while meditating may help improve your concentration and focus, which in turn may affect your memory capacity. So, you see, only chanting the mantra doesn't do the work, not directly at least. For a substantial effect, you need to practice many techniques for improving memory.

Absolutely.
Also try Gingko Biloba.
If you are really into improving your memory stay away from pasta and anything containing wheat flour. Often a wheat allergy (which most people have) will cause memory difficulties.
AND get rid of all diet soda and regular soda for that matter. ALL forms of diet soda are brain damaging. Replace with water, lemon juice and Stevia drops - makes lemonade supreme!

leisure activities, reading, playing board games, playing musical instruments, and dancing were associated with a reduced risk of dementia! It is important to make list, and keep calenders too. (write important meeting time on days ahead) The new Nintendo ds has some memory games, but beware of other video games unless they are puzzles, or trivia.

It is usually seen that if you have real interest in a subject you will be able to memorize it. But if you have less interest or ignore something it is difficult to remember anything on it. So, first of all see whether the thing you want to memorize is really of your interest or not.

You have to do it in increments. Like study 10 minutes and rest. Study another 10 minutes and rest. You absorb more than just doing it continuously. Thats why elephants forget nothing. lol.
