They might belong to the Plymouth Brethren or Exclusive Brethren. I used to live next door to some people who were in that. They are quite cult-like, and do not tend to welcome outside interest. My understanding of it is as follows (although I can't make guarantees for accuracy): In the most purist sense they are not actually supposed to touch or speak to anyone who is not one of them, so for example if they go into a shop they should drop the money into the assistant's hand and then hold out their hand for the change to be dropped into it to avoid any accidental touching. They marry within the religion and patronise one another's businesses unless the service they need cannot be met by another member of the religion.

No it is not religion. Do you mean like wearing then like bandanas or like grannies? Well I wear bandanas which you might call headscarves, usually in the summer to protect my head because they are more comfortable than hats and don;t blow away. If you mean like grannies, they normally wear them in the winter, sometimes instead of an umbrella. The scarves are basically the same either way, just fastened differently.

I don't think that it has much to do with religion, in this day and age. When my grandmother was growing up, I believe that it was lewd to show the hair outside of the home - especially in church, so a babushka (the triangle of cloth - normally a scarf or bandana) was worn.
My grandmother later wore them like a cap on cold or rainy days. My mom wore them around the house to keep her hair back out of her face and protect her hair when she was painting or cleaning, I used to wear them on bad hair days and for fashion, my daughter wears them strictly because they are popular.
Of course, all of this information is from my own experience. I think that there are other people who wear them for religious or cultural reasons.

I beleive it is one of those plymouth brethren type cults.
The woman always have long hair with those little hankie things tied over their heads.
If a grown woman wants to wear her hair like that, well fair enough, but making the children do it too seems unreasonable.
I wonder, if the women have to wear those little headscarves, what sort of dress code do the chaps have? Underpants back to front perhaps?

There are many women who cover their heads in submission to their husbands and fathers. There are also those who cover their heads for prayers. This comes from I Corinthians 11:2-7 it basically states that if a woman prays or prophecies with her head uncovered then she disgraces her head. If she refuses to cover her head then it is the same as if she were shaved. If she doesn't want her hair shorn then she should cover it. By the way there are all types of Christian women who do this.I do and I am a Roman Catholic. Some of us do this because of this scripture and also because we are trying to make reparation for the sins of disrespect and immodest portrayed today towards Our Lord.

Judaism, Islam, and some sects of the Catholic Church, I think, have a requirement for women who leave the house to cover their hair when out and about.

They are used by women of certain religions but also as a hair accessory when you can't get your hair to go right or you want it off your neck.
It's just another way of keeping your hair looking neat and tidy.

It was something of a fashion fad a few years ago, and it still has its adherents. I think that it's almost purely fashion these days. Besides, a lot of wearers look cute with them. :-)

Perhaps it is just a fashion statement, doesnt have to be anything to do with religion.
