In order to get a B1 or B2 (visitors) visa the first they ask is to proof that you count the necessary economical means to afford a trip and that you have familiar links in your own country that will force you to return. Economical means have to be demonstrate displaying the bank statements for the last 12 months. If you have a house you have to show the ownership documents, the same if you have a car. In the application you are asked for your marital status, here never write single or divorced. Go dressed normal (preferable in work clothes) avoid making any bluf, for this will play against you. The consulate reserves the right to deny a visa without any explanation. The consular fee is not returnable

What they will DEFINITELY ask you is how you are going to support yourself financially ... do you have private funds? Do you have a sponsor? Do you have a job? If you have none of the above, you won't stand a chance ... that is, if you intend to stay in the United States for any length of time ... for a normal tourist visa, you don't have to have any specific things ... except a return ticket ... which they check ....
