INGREDIENTS:
2 cups sugar
1/2 gallon water
1 tray ice cubes
3 family sized teabags of orange pekoe tea
3 cups cold water, or as needed
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
DIRECTIONS:
Pour the sugar into a large pitcher. Bring water to a boil in a large pan. When the water begins to boil, remove from the heat, and place the teabags in. Let steep for 5 to 6 minutes.
Remove tea bags, and return tea to the heat. Bring just to a boil, then pour into the pitcher, and stir until the sugar is dissolved. Fill the pitcher half way with ice, and stir until most of it melts. Then fill the pitcher the rest of the way with cold water, and stir until blended.

I tend to use Lipton family-sized tea bags because I can find them in about any store, in about every state. However, I've used Tetley and Luzianne, as well. I personally use decaffeinated tea bags because I feel that some brands of caffeinated tea have a slight after taste. But you can make sweet tea this way, no matter the tea bags you choose.
For one gallon of prepared tea:
Bring anywhere from 1 to 1 1/2 quarts of water (depending on the size of your pot -- it doesn't make too much difference how much water you use) to a rolling boil. Place four family-sized tea bags in the boiling water and use a spoon to dunk them under the boiling water for just about 30 seconds, or so, before removing the entire pot from the heat. Cover the pot with a snug lid and let it sit, covered (steeping), for approximately 10 minutes.
Pour two cups of granulated sugar into a gallon container and then pour the tea from the pot (after ten minutes) into the container. Add enough hot water to reach the one gallon mark, and stir well. The sugar should dissolve almost instantaneously after the hot tea is poured in.

I have found that the best iced tea is tea that is brewed as if you were making a hot cup of tea with boiling water and the 5 to 7 min steep time. Then pour over ice. I have also found that the Mr. coffee (I know we're talking tea now) Ice Tea maker is great and makes wonder full tea, and you can use either bagged or loose tea in it.

I grow my own tea, so I pick a few leaves crush them into warm water and let them sit in the sun . Green sun tea .... oh yea it's good . Camellia sinensis is the plant , the leaves when crushed and set to ferment turn to black tea after oxidation takes place. same plant produces green and black tea. And the plants are sold on e-bay

Use Luzianne bags to make sun tea. Nothing beats it. Serve over ice with a couple of lemon slices and you'll be in heaven.
