Puerto Rico is the Spanish name for the island but there is some debate as to whether it means "Rich Port" or is a Spanish conquistador corruption of the original Taino Indian name. Borinquén meaning "Land of the valiant ones" was a Taino name for Puerto Rico. This name or something similar could also have been the source of the name Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico was never one of Spain's wealthier colonies. This is what makes the "Rich port" etymology for the place suspicious.
