Should we change the laws to something like this?
Anyone entering the USA on a permanent legal alien basis will have only one period of status. After such time they MUST either apply for citizenship, or leave.

I can see no reason to allow anyone to live thier entire life here, enjoying the benefits, without assuming the responsabilities , as well

Furthermore, you aiether know nothing or you purposely lie! LEGAL ALIENS do QULIFY FOR both SSI AND food stamps. when one qualifies for one they are stautorily qualified for the other. I know, I was a fully certified food stamp, and public benefits case owrkr for the state of ARIZONA and I never had a single dollar error, ever
There are (were) certain classifications for aliens that could make them inelegible (5 yr waiting period for '86 amnesty aliens, for instance) Did you know that?
NO!
but beyond certain limiting classes of legals that can not receive (students visitors) the only thing stoppong them from receiving these benefits is the same thing that sops citizens from receiving

I ADVISE YOU TO KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT OR SHUT UP AND LOOK MUSH LESS FOOLISH AND STUPID!
You just never know when you run into the one person that knows and blows your ingorance and lies out of the water!

What benefits do legal residents enjoy without responsibilities?

Legal residents pay the same amount of taxes that citizens do and according to the '96 immigration and welfare acts get fewer benefits. Example: estate tax exemption that citizens enjoy do not apply to legal residents. Legal residents do not qualify for food stamps or SSI.

You are obviously very ignorant about this subject. Before posting such inflammatory questions, you should get your facts straight.

I think that the only reason a person should be allowed to enter the US wothout being a citizen is with a visitor's passport, temporary work visa or on a visa where they intend to become citizens. The people that work in the US from out of the country should have to pay federal, local, and state taxes where they work regardless of their citizenship.

We need to limit the number who come even if they apply for citizenship. We also don't want people getting citizenship just so that we will continue subsidizing their education and services, as we do for all poor people in this country, even if they pay all taxes.

Poor people aren't asked to pay much in the way of taxes, to be honest. Their taxes nowhere near cover their cost of services like education and health care, which is why all countries don't provide it. (As Mexico doesn't.)

That is why there are limits, and why the line is long to get in.
