If for some reason you wanted to maintain a conversation with such a person then try to relate all your topics of conversation to them. This way they'll stay interested. Perhaps slowly drawing them away from themselves and ultimately to something beneficial and fulfilling.
Personally, I wouldn't bother. In fact I would do my best to ignore their self obsessed behaviour and use insulting commentary to make plain my dissatisfaction with the behaviour. Being so overboard in this as to either affect a change in their behaviour or drive them away. Either way I win. I know this isn't an answer to your question, nor is it an enlightened or even 'good' way to deal with the problem, but it is my way.

Try to choose a topic that interests them e.g. sport, cooking etc.
Whenever the person goes to talk about themselves, kindly change the conversation. They will get the message in the end.
If the person maintains a conversation with you other than talking about themselves then allow them to indulge a little about themselves. You will need to take charge of the conversation.

You could always end the conversation with -
"Well, let's talk a little about you. When did your ego consume your personality and make you such a self-centred, vainglorious arsehole? I'd be really interested to know."

walk away and start a conversation with someone else - that's the only way you'll have a fulfilling conversation

With some people it's probably not worth bothering. If you can talk to someone else, If there is someone that can answer your question properly then he/she is a social genius.

I don't think it's possible, unless you want to talk about them 24/7.

you could try to shift topics, but why would you even want to go through that much trouble when the person is obviously not worth the time.

Just agree with them, be polite, and avoid them in the future!

you can't. i find the most effective way is to let them burn themselves out and if they don't ask you anything about you then go and talk to someone else
