Also how long does it take to get it updated if you had one like 30 years ago (even if it is missing)

Passports are issued by the US Department of State. But you can get the application at your local post office. If not, just go online to the passport office web site below. You will need two small photos to go with your application and you can usually get those at a AAA office, some travel agencies do them and other places advertize passport photos. You can take your application to the post office or mail it to the passport office. If you need the passport in a hurry, you can request expedited service and pay extra for the express mailings. The normal processing time is about six weeks, but you can request AND pay for expedited service and get your passport in about two weeks. My bet is the closer to the end of this year we get, the longer normal processing will take because more people will be applying because they are going out of the country. I suggest that you apply as soon as possible.

You may not need a passport if you are going out of the US and come back before the end of this year. But it will save you a lot of hassle traveling outside the country and MOST IMPORTANTLY, a passport is required of all US citizens to reenter the USA starting January 1, 2007. Once you get the passport you will be set for 10 years. If you don't have your old passport just tell them that on the application form. The web site below will answer all of your questions about passports.

They tell you six weeks - mine took six weeks and a couple of days. Or you could have it expedited - doubles the cost - and it's two weeks. Since it's been 30 years since your passport was issued, they'll treat your app like it's the first time you've ever applied for a passport.

Passport could be make very fast now b/c of the new system that the gov. has. :)
Mine was w/i 2wks. So DON'T PAY them extra $$ just to get it fast. In Chicago, you could get it w/i a DAY. Check w/ ur local area.
This is same w/ lost passport.

I just applied for one in April 2006. They told me to allow 6 weeks but I got it in about 24 days.
