As a child, I once was given a mouthsoaping by mother for swearing, got loss of pocket money a few times and even once and only once, threatened with a slap in the face if I was rude to anyone at a family get together.
I once heard, but did not see my older brother receive the leather belt from mother.
What discipline have you received, or given?

Also, do you think it was a good or a bad thing I was made to hear the belting?

I've been spanked (hand only) and slapped at home, got my ears pulled and had the ruler in the palms treatment a couple of times at school. I never considered myself abused. When I started teaching, I really wished I could have slapped certain kids for their attitude... But as things are, I can't touch them, and I have to settle for sending them out and talking to their parents. Much good it does.

As a child I received many slaps on different parts of face and legs etc. I came from very violent background. Which is why I made the decision that I was not going to use pain and/or fear to handle my child. I did other things instead. One was to draw up a small `chart' like on a blackboard, or whatever, and give good marks [little stars] and black points for any behavior that was not OK. This worked very well for me; and when I was running a nursery a few years ago; it was a wonderful saving grace: and not one violent use in any way!
[and the kids/babies thrived!]

Oh so many beatings that it wasn't funny.(with a leather belt) Grounding, No TV, No Telephone, And the worst, was a beating with a cherry tree branch. And you know what I turned out fine. As they say, "Spare the rod, spoil the child" If a kid/child needs discipline then the child gets discipline. Abuse in my opinion is when the child gets broken bones, or when blood is drawn.

The world was a much better place when parents cared enough to disipline their children. They where more respectful and had more self pride. As kids we got spankings and groundings, but we would never dream of talking back like kids do today. You can answer if it was right or not ,did you turn out to be a good person, did your brother,i did so i think discipline is a good thing.Good luck God bless:O)

Unfortunately I'm a survivor of 18 yrs of child abuse. My father ruled with an open belted hand swinging. Abused children tend to repeat the history by marrying into the same situation. I did this 3 x.......I'm married now to #4 for 12 yrs. This man knows not to shove or even give the impression that he will abuse. Tramatized for most of my life....When put into a situation now reflex now is to hit back ask questions later!
With own children....I ground them, take priveledges away. Lecture....no hitting....

My mom used a belt with a HUGE buckle on it. When it left marks, my dad made a wooden paddle for her. I spank my children with my hand (I'm 5'3" and weigh 135, my 13 year old son is bigger than me now) but that was when they were younger. Now, I take away what they love and they only get a smack for swearing at me or talking to me disrespectfully.

i have been spanked a lot. got the belt a few times by my dad(i still love him very much, even though he is at the happy hunting ground). but the worst i thought was when my mom sent me to the corner! i have so far given my daughters spankings, yelled, and sent to the corner of which it sometimes works.

soap, belt, corner, grounding, slapped in the face. That was all for me. I only once in a great while spank my kid. He gets the corner and grounding mostly.

I disciplined my kids with my mind, I used intelligence to teach them right from wrong. My kids have grown up to be happy healthy young adults.

Same! But instead of physical discipline you must be grounded(detained inside your room)
