I think that the reason why it is so contraversial is primarily because of the taboo on sex in Western religions. If Jesus knocked up Mary Magdalene then he must have got down and dirty. God on the other hand inseminated Mary by virtue of a miracle. There was no foreplay for him.
And as to why sex is taboo, please see my answer to this question about an hour ago.

A Japanese scholar, Hayao Kawaii, argues that the taboo on sex on Abrahamic relgions (Judaism, Christianity and Islam) is related to the fact that they all have male gods. In idealising the male is born a need to taboo those parts of masculinity with which not everyone could identify. If Jesus had been a playboy, then he never could have become a role model for women who would have found such behaviour alienating.
Interestingly sex is not made out to be evil by all religions. In Shinto and Hinduism for instance, sex is often a part of religious festival and celebrated as being sacred.
This is a picture of a phallic object in a Japanese Shinto festival. (Warning! it is large erect and pink!)

Here in Japan, there the top God - of the sun - is a woman, there is a tendency to taboo female sexuality - childbirth and menstruation, for the same reasons, perhaps, in reverse. In other words, if female sexuality were not concealed, men might find it difficult to identify with the motherly commpassion that is held up as an ideal.
Some moslems argue on the same thread, that Moslems do not have a problem with sex. If that is true, why is that they encourage their women to wear Purdah?

It does not seem to make sense to me.

The story takes away the whole point of His living. People get wrapped up in particulars and forget the real purpose. Jesus came to teach and to let people know that a new time has begun in history and that God has descended from Heaven. The point is not if His bloodline carried on, it's that He is the only Son of God and that through Him, He is the only way to God.

"That may not be important to you, but to many of us whose hope is eternal life, it is a major major important issue."
That's the real answer to all the religious garbage questions - people hoping for immortality. Stupid, wishful thinking, that's all. People will believe anything if they can use it to convince themselves they won't cease to exist someday. For some reason, humans don't like the idea of their individual existence being finite and concluding fairly soon. Such thinking (believing some super dude has the desire or ability to keep you alive forever and ever) is no more mature than the wild teenager who believes himself to be invincible to things that can and often do kill people, like overly fast cars, and misuse of alcohol and drugs. In fact, the idea that one will continue to live after death is far more chilidish and comical than the teenagers' misguided belief that one can simply evade death due to inherent good luck.
So if Jesus is a sinner, who bonked some broad, (or like the song says "what if god was one of us") then it would mean all the stories are crap and we are all mortal and will die and stop existing really soon instead of getting to kick it forever with our so-called merciful maker, and that would suck (but that's also what is real, damn the bad luck, eh?)

actually i think it would enhance his divinity. he was truly one of us.i truly have always believed Mary Magdalene was his wife. she washed his feet that was part of a Judaic marriage ceremony, also almost all feminine was deleted out of the bible by the early priests as a way for men to control women. as was meditations on how to connect with God directly (as we're supposed to) she was one of his most ardent disciples........we'll never know the truth as the original text of the bible has been so edited that none of the original text remains intact.

If Jesus was a sinner we have no sacrifice for sins and we will all spend eternity in Hell. That may not be important to you, but to many of us whose hope is eternal life, it is a major major important issue.
