Unfortunately it sort of comes with the territory. They are involved with so many arrogant and disrespectful people, crooks, cheats and downright mean kind of persons that they loose perspective. Plus they have to deal with life threatening situations on a daily basis. It is very refreshing when you have an encounter with a policeman who is nice and polite. There are many of them out there. The honest public appreciate them very much.
Then there are those who has no respect for the badge nor the people he is supposed to serve. These are the kind who should never be on the force or any kind of position that involves dealing with people...especially when they wear a badge that says you can't touch me...and I have a stick ...I can whip your a-- or shoot you if I feel like it. They are the ones who misrepresent the uniform and are there purposely to brutalize and initiate their hatred and prejudices upon the public.

Why does your boss tell you what to do? They presume to be your superior by telling you what to do.

The police are not arrogant or power hungry, they do a job that is ridiculed by a vocal minority. They act from a position of authority because being submissive doesn’t work when attempting to force people to abide by the law. For instance people know that they can’t speed, they do it anyway. When they are pulled over and given a ticket they act childish and blame the officer, ie. “The damn cop gave me a ticket”. This is called blame projection as the person refuses to be at fault for their own actions. When dealing with these types of personalities, adults that have refused to grow up and take responsibility, you must be stern or the lesson will be lost.

Hope this helps.

now that all the cop bashers have had their say lets try for a serous answer. part of it is something called command presence. cops always try to take control over a situtation and the attitude you call arrogance is one of the tools used to do this. having control helps them to sort out a situtation faster and may improve officer safety. its a tough job. having said that however there are some cops that are just arrogant SOBs. like any other group there are good cops and not so good cops.

Because most were beat up in high school and want a payback. I once got a chance to play flag football against a police department. Lets jus say at 6'6 238 I was called for 3 roughing penalities. One cop even ended up with a broken nose. They are the worlds biggest gang when they have their gun. Without it most are a bunch of baitches.

That's a good question, i guess they are selected / taught to be that way, because at sometime they may be ordered to do something immoral, and it helps if they consider themselves superior.

you have to bear in mind they are the enforcers of a corrupt system

...because they've got the guns, and a vast array of governmental military hardware to back them up if they get in a jam.

You'd be cocky to, if you had that much power; It's a fact of human nature, I believe.
