Though I actually attempted to find the history behind this etiquette on the internet, I was unsuccessful... as a result, I think I'll focus on common sense here...
In general, pointing your finger has 2 noticeable effects.
1) It singles the person out.
2) It indicates a sense of superiority in the pointer over the pointee.
It would seem, when coupling the two together, that there would be a strong sense of "rudeness" in pointing simply because it draws attention to that particular person while putting them down.
So, think about it this way... if you made a mistake and someone decided to literally point it out by pointing at you, would you really want everyone else around you to know that you're now inferior to this other person?? It doesn't make someone feel all that good about themselves or the situation.

I guess mainly because it could make the other person uncomfortable. None of us want to be pointed at and talked about. It goes back to the Golden Rule.

My teacher before said that it's rude to point someone if you blame her/him.The one finger is for her and the rest is for you.But if you point and it's not a bad intention it's alright.Depends.

When you point at someone, you are singling them out and drawing attention to them and they may not be comfortable with that.
