I want to "rip/cut" a section of a DVD (Approx 1min lon) what format should I convert in to to get the best quality? And what is a codec?

You can use the program called Auto Gordian Knot in the link supplied below to convert DVD vob files into AVI's and Mpeg files. Good Luck! Download the file and install it.

Xvid is your best bet.
Two pass conversion.
I'd use Smartripper for the extraction
and AutoGK for the conversion.

No offense intended but you sound like a newcomer to this,
and the software I have chosen for you is about the best
for a newbie.
Very simple, very straightforward and good quality.

AVI becouse ........... hey we will get the answer for b'coz. if u donn wanna convert it then play dvx player or VLS player it give u good quality
