A much more reliable technique is to hold it up to the light, and you'll see two metal pieces inside, one of them a lot larger than the other. The lead that's attached to the larger of the two is connected to the negative (and hence, the smaller of the two is connected to the negative).
But always, ALWAYS connect an LED to a battery via a resistor!
And getting the connections the right way around is essential - at best it won't light and at worst you'll blow the LED up.

A light-emitting diode (LED) is a semiconductor device that emits incoherent narrow-spectrum light when electrically biased in the forward direction. This effect is a form of electroluminescence. The color of the emitted light depends on the chemical composition of the semiconducting material used
Normally if the Pin-Out is large/long it is Positive. other ways to ditinguish to the polaritires are :
if an wire is red ma\eans it is +ve .. black means it is -ve

Banderes is wrong! LEDs are diodes and, hence, pass current only one way. Long is positive (anode)... short is negative (cathode). LEDs must have a series resistor to limit current. Whenever connected to AC, an LED must have another diode in series with it to protect it from high reverse voltage.

On LED, long wire is connected to positive.
LED polarity is
sign: + â
polarity: positivenegative
terminal: anode cathode
wiring: red black
pinout: long short
interior: small large
shape: round flat
marking: none stripe

Since its a LED it dont matter mate!
It only has to pass current to light up,
(i mean it isnt a capacitor etc etc)
