The modern concept of hell was invented by christians to be the opposite of their perfect heaven. If chirstians go to heaven, then bad people must go someplace horrible... thus hell.
Most of the doctrine of hellfire comes from the insane writings of the madman of patmus. I wouldn't trust much of it.

2Chr.28:1-4; To 3305 after Eden, then Jer.7:30,31,32; 3423 after Eden, turned it into Jerusalem's city dump Mark 9:42-48; By then and the last I heard, they did cut off the hand of a thief. Matt.10:28[Jesus told his disciples not to fear this place, if God did not put then there, they would be resurrected souls]; For sure God put Satan in a simular place at the end of Christ 1000 year reign.
As for Acts 2:31-35; John 19:38-41[Jesus as resurrected out of sepulchre hell, the tomb, cave or grave]; David from 2039 after Eden was still there when Christ was risen 4099 after Eden, in the year 33. He was born 2006 years ago.
Rev.20:1-6,12,13; and 1Cor.15:22-28, 51-53; Does not leave any place where the souls are not brought forth to the resurrection.
Adam and Eve were Created souls. We after them are born souls in sin to die.
We have a promise to be resurrected souls, some for the new heavens and some for the new earth, 2Pet.3:13. Rev.21:1-5;

Professed Christians adopted the belief in hellfire well after the time of Jesus Christ and his apostles. The French Encyclopædia Universalis states, “The Apocalypse of Peter (2nd century C.E.) was the first [apocryphal] Christian work to describe the punishment and tortures of sinners in hell.” Among the early Church Fathers, however, there was disagreement over hell. Justin Martyr, Clement of Alexandria, Tertullian, and Cyprian believed that hell was a fiery place. Origen and theologian Gregory of Nyssa thought of hell as a place of separation from God—of spiritual suffering. Augustine of Hippo, on the other hand, held that suffering in hell was both spiritual and sensory—a view that gained acceptance. “By the fifth century the stern doctrine that sinners will have no second chance after this life and that the fire which will devour them will never be extinguished was everywhere paramount,” wrote Professor J.N.D. Kelly.
In the 16th century, such Protestant reformers as Martin Luther and John Calvin understood the fiery torment of hell to be figurative of spending eternity separated from God. However, the idea of hell as a place of torment returned in the following two centuries. Protestant preacher Jonathan Edwards used to strike fear in the hearts of 18th-century Colonial Americans with graphic portrayals of hell.
Shortly thereafter, though, the flames of hell began to flicker and fade. “The 20th century was nearly the death of hell,” states U.S.News & World Report

The concept of hell actually developed during what is called the intertestamental period. This is about a four hundred year period between when the Hebrew Scriptures were written and the New Testament writings. You can find some of these documents and development of thought in Gerza's Dead Sea Scroll Translation.

Some say that the Old Testament doesn't mention hell but does indeed mention eternal punishment.
"Multitudes who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake: some to everlasting life, others to shame and everlasting contempt." (Daniel 12:2)
""As the new heavens and the new earth that I make will endure before me," declares the LORD, "so will your name and descendants endure. From one New Moon to another and from one Sabbath to another, all mankind will come and bow down before me," says the LORD. "And they will go out and look upon the dead bodies of those who rebelled against me; their worm will not die, nor will their fire be quenched, and they will be loathsome to all mankind." (Isaiah 66:22-24)
So as you can see it wasn't an invented thing.
