I normally go for the weekend.

Get a nice little B&B and then look for the PArk and Ride (never try parking near the course, it just doesn't happen)

ON a Saturday just walk the course, maybe following a certain group/player. But get to see as much of the course as you can.

On Sunday get their for about 8.30, walk straight to the 18th green and sit in the stands (many are free only 1 or 2 are reserved!) You may have to wait for a while but you will then see every group finish, plus the ceremony etc.

Equipment wise, good sensible shoes, a backpack for food/drink etc, wet weather gear (in case) nd a hat (umbrella's cause a nuisance!)

wear comfortable shoes. try and get there early about 07.30 so you can sus out the best places to watch from. if possible go to a practice day when you can have some fun and maybe chat with some of the lesser known players. drink plenty not alcohol and take your own food and drink especially at the weekend.if you can avoid sunday watch it on bbc cos it gets very hectic.have a bet on 3 or 4 players to have some interest [ i had a fiver each way on ogilvie for u.s.open and got 635 quid back]and really enjoy yourself wish i woz there but had a stroke 3 years ago although i hope to go to birkdale in 2008

You can buy tickets on the gate. It is one of the few major sporting events where this is possible, go to to randa.org (website for the R&A who organise The Open) for more info. It is worth going on one of the practice days as you will still see all the players but easier to view. Take clothing for all eventualities and enjoy it its a great week!! Also BBC coverage if you are watching on tv is fantastic.

Accomodation is going to be expensive. Try to stay at a cheap B&B in the Liverpool area and enjoy the golf.

Do something more productive with your time than watch people hit little balls into little holes...
