If your just betting tommorrow, good luck, just about anything can happen. If you plan on betting in the future, make friends with as many people in the local industry that you can. Educate yourself on the policies, horses, owners and jockeys as much as possible. And watch the people who go up and collect winnings from the window most often. They are the ones to be behind in line before the next race.

You can go on a horses stats (you can buy books at the track with recent race stats) but be sure to look at the horse,in person if possible, and if it seems too energetic or too lazy you may want to reconsider stats and odds. Just like people they have good days and bad days too! It's very important in young horses especially to see how many races they have competed in and where they finished in those races(note the diff lengths of races and whether they were running on dirt or turf) Also note the ascending or descending finishing positions. I have always had luck this way. I may have a slight advantage to some people cuz I have had my own horse since I was 3. You learn how they respond to certain situations most of the time. The biggest payoff is if you can successfully match a trifecta(not boxed)That's where you pick the exact race results for the top 3. This is VERY tough to do but if you only bet a minimal amount, something you can afford, then it's worth a try with confidence. My best advice is to start out with a few different $1-$2 bets per race till you know if you've got the hang of it.

Hang-out in the stables today at the race track, look at them doing test runs. Get some tips. That will give you some ideas as to what horses are most fit, are in good condition, are having a breakthrough or a break-down. Then your chances at betting are much better. Play on a couple of different ones for each race and also follow your gut instinct on the background of the information that you have gathered from the stables, the stable hands, the jockey, etc. And be innocent about that part :)

Also, look at the racing form carefully, see if any of the horses have dropped down in class, if they previously were racing for BIG BUCKS and this race isn't, this horse may blow away the field.

The reverse could be true to, is this the first major $ race for the horse (if applicable).

Compare their best races with the current track conditions, and length of races they have gone before vs current, if this is a shorter race then usual for them, and they faded in others, this may be THEIR race.

There are so many things to compare, that is why serious bettors get their INFO sheets days ahead.

I haven't bet much, but I have hit an exacta.
