It isn't. Adultry (sex with someone other than your spouse) is.

What do you mean by modern?
Afew hundred years? Afew thousand years?
Read the Bible. Revised King James version.
Pray for understanding of what you read.
You might miss the answers.
Start with Genesis, then read Matthew.
The Bible is full of things you should know about
life. So sex , and sex of all types is in the Bible.
Also the out come of the act. Many peoples eyes
are closed. I heard a TV preacher, preach on
fornication. Wow, he broke it down.
People of 12 and above would understand it.
I know afew, "little church girls" who have Babies.
If they heard this Preacher speak about it,
they may have waited. Maybe some of the
people I know, or met thru my job would not
have died of Aides.
Evil was there. Sin, is evil.

It's NOT. People talk about it TOO MUCH! It's
only Sex. You get TIRED of hearing about it all
of the time, like it's Something New. People have
been having sex, every sense the World Began.
Talking about it "Constantly," and asking "Stupid"
Questions about Positions, etc. which is
Common Sense, takes away the Appeal. God
Created Sex, So It "CAN'T" be Evil. Only people
make it Evil. Sex between MARRIED couples
can be Beautiful. Marriage means Commitment.
Commitment means "LOVE," in most cases.
Who doesn't want that? The ones that ask "Dirty
Questions, must really be "Amazed" by sex,
because they are "Just Discovering It."

Because that's a great way to control you. You know, they cannot tell you not to eat, because you'll die. Also, they cannot tell you not to drink water, not to sleep, not to wash yourself, etc., for exactly the same reason.
Now, a person can go without sex for considerably longer. So they make you believe that having sex is filthy, so you don't do it. But abstinence makes anyone more nervous, vulnerable and neurotic. And this way they control you better, not to mention that whenever you fail to keep abstinence (which is absolutely normal, BTW) you are made to feel dirty and guilty for the terrible "sin" you've commited.
Of course, this scheme would have been perfect if it weren't that sex is essential for the reproduction of the human race. We need to have sex, so the species doesn't disappear. So, they've invented this rule: you'll have sex ONLY with your spouse, and ONLY to reproduce yourself. Sex outside marriage is sin. Sex for the sake of it is (for some religions) a sin, too. Talk about manipulation!!!

In answer to your question, a Japanese scholar, Hayao Kawaii, argues that the taboo on sex on Abrahamic relgions (Judaism, Christianity and Islam) is related to the fact that they all have male gods. In idealising the male is born a need to taboo those parts of masculinity with which not everyone could identify. If Jesus had been a playboy, then he never could have become a role model for women who would have found such behaviour alienating.
Interestingly sex is not made out to be evil by all religions. In Shinto and Hinduism for instance, sex is often a part of religious festival and celebrated as being sacred.
This is a picture of a phallic object in a Japanese Shinto festival. (Warning! it is large erect and pink!)

Here in Japan, there the top God - of the sun - is a woman, there is a tendency to taboo female sexuality - childbirth and menstruation, for the same reasons, perhaps, in reverse. In other words, if female sexuality were not concealed, men might find it difficult to identify with the motherly commpassion that is held up as an ideal.

Mostly to be used as a control mechanism.
The one thing that EVERY human will want as much of as they can get is sex. If a sense of guilt and shame can be taught regarding that biological desire, then an "alternative" can be suggested to "cure" the problem, the person with the "cure" can control the people.
As the "Song of Solomon" put it so well, sex is beautiful and holy. Anybody preaching otherwise is Anti-God.

Some people worship sex. Their desire for personal gratification exceeds their desire to know and love God. Most religions see this as an evil distraction, which sex can be. But in a safe and loving relationship sex is a wonderful thing. It is a gift from God you might say. God wants us to enjoy life, but he does not want us to make it the focal point of our lives.

It is usually based on outdated relious writing that was there , for example, to try and stop the Jewish peoples from having too many babies during the exodus. However like many ancient writings this has been taken out of context and made in to whatever that faith wants to try and use as a means of social control and fear.

I think it's because sex is something that can easily control a person. Taking sex away can make people crazy and when you are crazy it is easy to convince you of things. Religion isn't always very easy to believe, so I think that control is important when you need to brain wash, etc. Also, if you want people to get married, tell them they can't have sex before marriage!

It is ok within marriage. In religion sex is a culmination of a relationship between man and woman and this should be practiced by people who are willing to truly share there lives with a firm commitment as marriage demands.
