Buy an Italian/English dictionary. There are beginner's editions out there with pictures and everything. You'll want one that has both an English to Italian and an Italian to English section. This was very helpful to me when learning Italian, because then I could look up words I heard in class that I couldn't get in class (spoken in Italian) and I could look up the Italian translations for English words which I needed to finish my homework (like your post about needing 15 words for kitchen stuff in Italian).
