It is in NJ. I was stopped by a trooper in NJ about 20 years ago and told to put my shoes on or I would get a citation. Not sure about other states.

Let's face it. There are so many stupid rules about driving that one could jump to the wrong conclusion. For instance, "A cop told me that it's O.K. to drive without shoes." But, is that what the National Transportation and Road Rage Commission decided?

This is the same organization that ruled that a driver must give the other car the right of way. Now think about it. If you and I are at an intersection and you're heading east and I'm heading north, we each wait and give the other the right of way. Hours later, we'd still be at the same intersection. Weeks later, we'd be unemployed, living out of our cars which no longer have any gas, and begging for crumbs. Months later, we'd probably both be dead from exposure, dehydration, and boredom.

Using the same kind of logic, the NTRRC came up with the rationale for a law that makes it a crime to drive without at least one shoe. And, that shoe must fit on the left foot.

NTRRC reasoning goes like this: If the brakes fail, how can you stop your car before careening into a Winn Dixie storefront or a Victoria's Secret boutique? Answer: open the driver-side door and drag your left foot.

Whether you know it or not, your tax dollars are working for you by supporting helpful bureaucracies like the NTRRC.

I can tell you from experience that in the state of Indiana it is not illegal, nor is it illegal to drive with your left foot out of the window or on the dash, however don't wear a seatbelt and you will get a ticket because that is illegal. You should look in the Drivers manual for your state if it is not in there then it is not illegal. I searched the website listed below for California DMV and I did not see it mentioned that foot covering is required.

It is, in fact, illegal to drive without shoes in some states. And yes, because it's illegal, if a cop somehow catches you driving without shoes, you can be ticketed for it. It's fun to drive without shoes sometimes, isn't it? Perhaps in the summertime when coming back from the beach or when making long-distance trips.

No!

it is just illegal to drive bare foot while doing some other illegal thing!

Officer Mike Van Gorder says
And one other thing. I have been asked numerous times throughout various summers if it is against the law to drive a car barefooted. The answer is no, driving barefoot is not against the law. But don't get stuck having to walk on hot asphalt without shoes or flip-flops and do your best to stay cool!

Just kidding....but yes it is illegal and it is for a reason just as stupid as that one

You are correct in your belief that there may be a misconception concerning this issue. We do from time to time get inquiries such as yours. I am pleased to advise that there are no provisions in the Illinois Vehicle Code that prohibits operating a motor vehicle "barefoot
