An enema is introduction of a fluid (water, or various special blends of water with other substances) into the rectum via the anus. The patient holds the fluid voluntarily in the rectum for a time (seconds to minutes), and then defecates. The usual objective is to clear the rectum of all solid material.
Enemas have traditionally been used to treat severe constipation and fecal impaction (an even more severe form of constipation). At one time they were used to prepare the bowel for examination (colonoscopy, x-ray examinations), but often oral preparations are given for this purpose today. In some cases, as for x-ray examination of the lower bowel, an enema is given using a special contrast material that shows up well in x-rays; the patient must hold in this material while the x rays are taken.
Using enemas on a regular basis to assist with GI transit can lead to a slight dependency on them, although this is not difficult to overcome. Nobody in normal health needs regular enemas.

an enema is what you get when you have a blockage in your system and the doctors need to flush them out. so they take a hose and shove it up your butt and pump water into it until you have no more block and need to crap really bad.
