Because he didn't... He said that the old things are passed and gave two commandments to follow in their place. He wanted the people to strive for the others, but gave the two new ones as the new commandments.

Religion is the methods of a faith
Morality (commandments the must do's) of religion
Virtues are acts that mimic love (Compassion, Mercy, etc)

But Love trumps all. If you love you don't kill, commit adultry, covet, etc, and thus you don't need the commandments of the old testament. A woman who loves her child is not considered generous when she gives it a bottle of milk, Love always trumps virtue. St Paul abolished the need for gentiles to follow the picky little edicts of the jewish law and replaced it with love.

Three Cardinal Virtues: Faith, Hope and Charity.

Only one will survive in the end, Charity, the Agape love of God.

One day you won't need faith, because your faith will be fulfilled, you won't have anything to hope in, because you hope will be fulfilled, but love is eternal.

"I give you a new commandment. Love as I have loved you" This commandment trumps everything else in the law.

"If I have faith enough to move mountians, but do not have love, I am worthless"

Christians don't follow this commandment because they are human like the rest of us. Its hard enough to love those in your life that are worthy of love, much less the bastards that cut you off on the highway.

The bible is for two religions, Judaism and Christianity. Judaism was the right religion until the day of Pentecost. Christianity was born on the day of Pentecost and was to replace Judaism. Christianity does not demand that Christians obey the ten commandments.

Because they have been through a reformation (several, in fact) that resulted in them NOT taking their Bible literally except in very few cases. Only one major religion hasn't been through such a reformation: Islam. That's partially what this war is about. They still plan to convert, kill, or enslave all of us, according to their own texts.

Thank goodness Christians don't! What a world this would be? Instead, they have become a belief system that has done untold good in this world and become the greatest charity system in history.

I'm not a Christian, just a student of religion (all of them, and more), and a big fan.

I believe many misinterpret the scriptures. In Matthew 22: 37-40, Jesus revealed two great principles of His Law. That is love God and love to man. God is love, and His law is love. “In the beginning, man was created in the image of God. He was in perfect harmony with the nature and the law of God; the principles of righteousness were written upon his heart.” But sin alienated him from his Maker. His heart was at war with the principles of God’s law.” Then Jesus came and died for us. Through Him, man can be restored to harmony with his Maker.

“Sin is the transgression of the law.” By the law is the knowledge of sin.” 1 John 3:4. While the law promises life to the obedient, it declares that death is for the transgressor. “The gospel of Christ alone can free him from the condemnation or the defilement of sin.” But the sinner must exercise repentance toward God, whose law has been transgressed; and faith in Christ, his atoning sacrifice. Thus, he is forgiven for the past sins and a new birth of the heart is brought into harmony with God.

So does it does it mean that we can transgress God’s law? No. It is for the love of God that man keep his commandments.

In the New Testament, Jesus said, "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. Anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commandments will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven."
Matthew 5:17-20.

Well the bible says Jesus said many things and often these are contradictory.

However he did say that the ten commandments could be replaced with just two: love God, and love your neighbour as yourself. In respecting these two, respect for the others would follow...

Galatians 5:14 For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

It is impossible for anyone to keep all the ten commandments. We are humans. (even Christians are humans...) We are fallible and make mistakes. That is why we try our best to keep the commandments. When we break them we ask for forgiveness and keep trying to do our best.
