No different than them molesting innocent kids and then having the bishops cover for them.

Saint Nicholas is a real Catholic saint. I am not sure of his area of expertise, but my guess is that it involves the wellbeing of children.
You don't indicate the age of the niece. or if there was some purpose to his tale.
But is there a difference in a parent providing gifts from santa?
Should a child be exposed to exact factual descriptions only? On the assumption the niece is young - and still in the fantasy, fairy tale part of imagination and brain development, santa stands for a good natured, helpful person who keeps watch & possibly holds us accountable or at least counts our good & bad deeds. It would be communicating with a child in terms they understand. Let their questions be your guide, and be gentle with the answers.

Santa is just a magical bearer of gifts or candy . It is just for fun. It is not harmful...do you ever play a game with a child and let them win? That would be a lie. I play cards with my grandson (A game called fish) and I often let him win, or he would loose interest in the game. Is this a sin? I am teaching him to write his letters and he has a hard time and when he asks me does this look like a good letter a, I say yes it does, because if I say no he won't want to try anymore. I tease the kids when I am playing with them and tell them there is a spider on you. It's not true, but it is just a game and we have fun. No harm done!

She is a little girl. There is plenty of time to teach her about being Catholic. He probably remembers being a small boy himself. and maybe someone told him about Santa and it brings a happy thought to him. Her friends get presents from Santa you would not want her to be forgotten. She will learn as time goes by. Let her be a kid and enjoy the simple things. He is her uncle after all.

Lying to kids about Santa...it isn't done with I'll intentions, merely to keep the story of Santa alive and make kids excited about Christmas. No Harm No foul.

santa is kind of a safe, lie. Lies are lies, but studies have shown that beliving in the easter bunny, santa, etc have actualy helped kids deal with believing in God.

Plus the bible does say "Let he who lives without sin cast the first stone"

It is a harmless make-believe tradition.

Also, evanderzsov, Marx actually said that religion is the opiate of the masses. He wrote "It is the opium of the people" in the Critique of Hegel’s Philosophy of Right. Now if one really believes in the Bible, it is probably not prudent to quote a man that thought the abolition of religion/faith in God was a good thing.

What is wrong with that? It doesn't matter who it came from, it is the thought that counts. But I see what you are saying. Santa can't replace God, he is just a nice person who used to give presents to the less fortunate, that is why they called him SAINT Nicholas.

And I know a doctor who told a man who was dying that he was going to be fine. I also know a mother who told her daughter that her father didn't die of a horrible death, but went to a better place. And I know a daughter who told her mother that her son (the old woman's son) wasn't tortured before he was executed, but had a nice meal, instead. They are all bad people, according to you, aren't they? Go read a book, help a child, do something useful. You'll feel better.

Umm I think 90% of the parents in the world are guilty of this one, as well as many other adults who wanted to bring a bit of magic into their children's life at Christmas. No biggie to me. I am also guilty - still am with the grandsons, so what?
