There are only a limited number of reasons for swelling in the hands and feet:

1. You heart may not be pumping the blood well enough- that is , you may have heart failure which is not compensated by your diuretic. Likewise, if the sac around the heart constricts it, it cannot return the blood to the heart and swelling results.

2. You may have impaired venous return. Anything which blocks the return of blood to the heart, by compressing the large veins, or blocking it from within, as by a clot, will cause swelling. Either of these problems will cause swelling resistant to diuretics.

3. You may have faulty venous valves. Varicosities are often associated with non-functioning valves in the veins. These do not get better with diuretic treatment.

4. You may have bad lymphatic drainage. Lyphatics are important for clearing fluid from tissues, and if they are blocked by swollen lymph glands or by disease of the lymphatics, swelling results which may not be aleviated by diuretics.

5. You may have low circulating protein which causes more fluid to leak from your vessels into the tissue- if you are malnourished or have liver disease, this is often the case.

Your doctor is a rich person. Make him earn some of that moola and let him or her figure it out.

Because the circulation of the blood from your feet and hands to your heart are not working well. Do you weight a lot? You need to lose weight, but for now, try to stay off your feet and lie down with your feet above your heart level. Don't eat any salty foods or salt, for they retain water. Check with your doctor again and tell him/her about the swelling

Lassix, though not the best drug is commonly used for treating Hypertension. Treatment of hypertension is not only taking the drugs there are other things you should know about.
Did the physician said you have only hypertension? Did he confirm that there are no heart or kidney diseases because of that?
Leg swelling sometimes can be seen in patients with hypertension, but commonly seen in patients with diseases I just mentioned above. It shows that there are fluid and salt overload in your body. The Drug helps you eliminate salt[sodium chloride mainly] from your body via the kidneys. Have you reduced your salt intake when you started your lassix? it's recommended that you reduce your salt intake by at least 2/3 of what you previously consume. So check that 1st. Then contact your doctor to be sure that you don't have heart or kidney diseases because of your hypertension.[Hypertension is one of the common causes of heart and kidney diseases in the West.]
Doctor.

Pleas contact your Doctor!! You may need a stronger dosage of meds, or something different altogether. Swelling is a reaction/symptom of something else, not the problem itself.
Feel better soon!!!!
