Partially, it is the root of most problems in the world.
The Crusades, Inquistion, Salem Witch trials, native American Indians killed for not converting are examples of how religion was used in an evil way. Even now it is used. Sadly because people have been conditioned to believe in this fairytale it will be very difficult to break this silly habit of theirs.
thankfully I have and know that a person is capable of being a good person without religion.
As an old quote goes Religion is regarded by the common people as true, by the wise as false and by rulers as usefull.

No. Desire is the root to all evil. Because one desire to have something, one will either work hard to get it or think of nasty means to get. Religion basically teaches us not to be evil. Groups that teaches on to be evil cannot be considered as a religion at all. I think one must be able to distinguish good and bad even without religion or law.

No religion is not the root of all evil. It is money and pride that are the roots of all that is evil. Money does not buy happiness, eternal life or relationships. Pride in ones self is the downfall for many

Good people will do good things, and bad people will do bad things. But for good people to do bad things -- that takes religion. ~ Steven Weinberg, in a dialog on religion with other scientists, 1999, quoted from "The Constitution Guarantees Freedom From Religion" an open letter to U.S. Vice-Presidential candidate Senator Joseph Lieberman, issued by the Freedom From Religion Foundation on August 28, 2000

Many religious people are good and many are corrupt. Religion doesn't make you better unless you really live that way with heart and soul dedication. I actually like those people. It is the judgmental, right-wing, racist, redneck, self-righteous types who thought that a gay man deserved to go to hell type of thing I have a problem with. The religious right has too much power in America. More young people, moderates and Democrats need to gain a voice in politics.

No, selfishness is the muse of all evil. Many evils were commited with none religious involvement. Politics, land possession, racial prejudice and different situations are frequently used as excuses for violence or different styles of evil. even as faith or the different theory is used to make human beings trust they're extra perfect than somebody else, that's going to change into an excuse for evil. If a prepared crime gang kills individuals of alternative gangs who're competing for his or her drug commerce, what does that ought to do with faith?

Religion was - and still is - a good reason to do many bad things. But without this excuse to bring wars and other calamities over people, the leaders of clans, kingdoms and nations would have found other reasons.
