I have 5 pit bulls, and just last year in my city, they tried to pass a law banning pit bulls and pit bull-type dogs. You better believe I sent numerous emails to the city mayor and local newspaper showing outrage over this. Thankfully the law wasn't passed because dog owners like me stood up. Because I agree with you, our innocent and beloved dogs should NOT get the blame for what other irresponsible dog owners have done. A few bad apples shouldn't spoil the whole barrel. They should just ban ALL breeds of dogs, since ANY dog will bite. And when a dog bites, it's not because of what breed he is..Just like people don't commit crimes based on what race they happen to be. Pretty absurd logic. Dogs bite because of numerous factors in their environment, especially when a dog owner doesn't properly and thoroughly socialize their dogs constantly around people, cats, and kids.

Get a petition going! Call your local legislators! Take the dog to meet them and show them how sweet pit bulls can be! You can't just move - more and more communities are passing breed-specific laws. Soon, there will be no place for you and the millions of other great dogs to live at all!
Discrimination and banning breeds is not the answer. Ask your local lawmakers to pass laws to prosecute the owners of any dog that is allowed to run loose. If someone has a vicious dog and it bites someone, that owner should be punished the same way as if he left a loaded gun lying around and a child shot himself with it - make it a major felony!
Physically, any large dog is capable of killing a child. Even a Golden retriever accidentally killed a child this past winter - the child was sent out to play wearing a scarf. Tragically, the dog thought this was for him to play tug-of-war with and the child died of strangulation.

If it were me, I would move. Another thing you should do is join the fight against anti-dog laws. Start by joining the yahoo group petlaw.
I agree dog trainer. A leash law is what really works, unfortunately they are rarely enforced. They should be enforced with hefty fines and a court appearance. It wouldn't be popular but people sure would learn to confine their animals! Not only would it stop roaming and attacking dogs, but it also would put an end to dogs breeding indescriminately on the street. Sad that so few people 'get' this.

Coming from someone with personal experience with a "pit bull" dog, I would not recommend even having one. At first, I loved my dog - until she hurt the cats, nearly ate my pet duck, and finally bit my mom. That was it. The dog turned vicious. She was sweet as a puppy, but grew up snappy and intimidating.
I would keep your dog if it is nice. The only thing I am afraid of is the potential snap of these dogs. I have seen cases where the dog is nice, and one day it snaps. Just be careful, and by all means, do not end up homeless because of this situation.

That is a question that a lot of pit bull and other "bully breeds" are facing. Go to the yahoo group "Pet Law" and join. You can get a lot of answers, help, and advice from others who are going through or have been through what you are facing. There is also help in trying to change legislation there. Good luck.

Do everything you can to keep this law from passing. I was attacked by a german shepard, but you don't see me attempting to get them banned. This type of stereotyping of animals is wrong. I have 2 lab/pit mixes who are the most wonderful dogs. I would move to if this happened to me. I applaud your commitment to your dog!

I know someone that happened to. He just licensed the dog in another town under a relatives name. Then if the authorities came he could say he was watching the dog for someone. I'm not sure how it worked out or if he got away with it. But it sounded like a good idea.

If you really love your dog then stay with her and follow your heart. I know what your saying, my friend has the best pit i have ever met, who is shy and friendly. He told me that other dog are intimidated by the looks they get from pit bulls so they attack them. I'm not sure if it is true, but it sounds realistic

That's great that you are thinking of moving to be able to keep your beloved pet. It is true that not all dogs of a misunderstood breed are vicious. I worked at an Animal Shelter and my boss felt the same way - people tend to sterotype EVERYTHING. I hope you and your pup find a nice happy home if you do move!
