Go to a vet. This is a very common problem that can be quickly remedied by checking with a licensed vet.

"What should I do? If I give her back, I'll feel like I've failed the dog."

I would look at it this way. What's more important? Your precious son, with the rash and itching, or a dog? Return the dog, these people gave you a sick, unhealthy dog. By keeping this poor pup, you are risking your son's health as well as your own. And, because his medicine ran out, and the previous owners are showing no interest in refilling the medication, you will undoubtedly deal with expensive vet visits to care for the pup. Do not feel like a failure at all! This is not your fault. Explain to your son that the pup needs to go "home" (i.e. back to previous owners) to get well, and that you and him will select a new pup to welcome into your family. Best wishes to you.

A veterinarian is the best resource. Always take a pet in to the Vet immediately when something's wrong. Ask him about the "rash" spreading and how it should be handled. Call your doctor and pediatrician to follow up and get medicine right away. After that everything should be okay with everyone provided you follow all doctors instructions to a tee.

Guess the "free" dog won't really be free. You need a vet's diagnosis after a skin scraping and an extensive course of medication and shampoos. If you can't afford that, turn the dog in to animal control where he'll get the care he needs. Or put the dog to sleep - skin conditions are horrible, as you yourself are finding out!

It's time to hit the vet. Many types of mange can be transferred to us two legged types. Let your vet decided what it is, it could just be nothing but odd timing, but better check it out and make everyone happy!

Best of luck!

Sounds like it could be worms! You will all need to be treated. That does not mean you have to give up the pup, just get him and yourselves treated.

sounds like you could have a flea problem, call your vet, and a good groomer, a flea bath may be all your dog needs
