Shocking will bring crawlers to the surface but the electrical overload destroys their nervous systems and all of them will die pretty quick(a day or so). The best way is to wait until just after full darkness and you want the ground to be very wet. Nightcrawlers breathe oxygen and can't get any under water so they come to the surface. Bright light and/or ground vibrations will send them scooting back into their holes quickly. Use a dim light, like a flashlight with old batteries or a red lens cover and try to walk as softly as possible. Grab them as close the the hole as you can. Their vital internal organs (they have 5 hearts) are all located in the first 1/3 of their body length (ahead of the collar) so take care not to crush this area. Tweezers not needed, just catch them with your fingers. Work their tails out of the hole with steady firm pressure or they will break and broken ones will die and pollute the container. Store them in a covered ventilated container in the refrigerator.

It's pretty much common sense. I mean, night crawlers come out every night! That's a fact. All you need is a flash light, or head gear equip with light and you're good to go. Great days to pick them are when it is lightly raining and right before the rain stops because there are a whole lot more that comes out. You just got to be quick with your hands. Plus you definately save money.

the best time is worm mating season. It fluctuates between spring (when worm Love is in the air), and winter, when they're just trying not to freeze their clitellum off.
My yard is full off them because of all the leaf piles. Certain times of the year I cant even sleep because of the worm moaning. Its like a legless orgy out there. I wouldnt suggest shocking them up, because if your not wearing rubber souls you can get fried. I use a bug sprayer filled with water, and hot sauce. Its also tasty

i go out at night on a damp lawn with a torch and a pair of tweezers or on the pavement. its best to grab them by the head on grass as they bury themselves really quick. had over a 100 doing it this way in 1hr so it works.
