This is very strange indeed when verse 5 of that last chapter says "I will send you Elijah the prophet before the......day of the Lord". How can a prophet be sent when it says "The End of the Prophets"? And for that matter what must we do with the New Testament?
Extra points: Please explain what is meant in the very last verse of the Old Testament. "Turn the heart of the fathers to the children" etc. What is the curse?
I would enjoy reading any speculations, thoughts or insights on this subject. Please put some thought into this one.
Thank you.

Malachi was the end of the OLD Testament Prophets but Jesus was expected since Moses.
Luke 16:16; Jesus said, The Law and the prophets were unto John, so John was the last Prophet there when Jesus was talking. Jesus said that John was the equal of Elijah, Matt.11:13-15; Then Jesus said, Since then the kingdom is preached to you and every man presseth into it. Matt.10:34-38[family opposed to truth seekers]; 2Tim.3:1-7Bad attitudes the closer to Jesus second coming]; Matt.25:31-34[the sheep and the goat]; The turning of the hearts must yet to be something to come as it would be large scale and this old world knows nothing but trouble.

Here I go, first of all where does it say end of prophets neither of my bibles say that? Second Malachi 4:5 says I will send you the prophet Elijah So Elijah will be sent to prepare God's people for the Lords coming. John the Baptist ministered in the spirit and power of Elijah. And there are some that feel Elijah may also be one of the two witnessses in Rev 11:3, The curse is if Israel does not repent she will be dealt with like Edom was dealt with.

Elijah never died in the Old testament. God took him up in the heavens with him. The Old Testament gave the books of all major and minor prophets that foretold the coming of Jesus. That's why it says end of prophets.
In the New Testament Jesus was considered to be a prophet and where the prophecies about Jesus came true..
In answer to your last question, the curse is being sent to hell for not following the Mosaic Laws and decrees or revering the Lord's name.

Elijah had already come. He was going to send him again in the form of John the Baptist (in the Christian Faith). Malachi was the last prophet in the Jewish and Christian Faiths. When some Jews have one of their feasts, I can't remember which, they leave one seat open. It's for the return of Elijah to have a place to sit if he comes to their house.
The verse reads in my Bible: He will turn the hearts of parents to their children and the hearts of children to their parents, so that I will not come and strike the land with a curse
That he shall turn the hearts of the fathers with the children, and of the children with the fathers (for so some read it), to God and to their duty. He shall call upon young and old to repent, and shall not labour in vain, for many of the fathers that are going off, and many of the children that are growing up, shall be wrought upon by his ministry

Have you not read Jesus' words when he stated that John the Baptist was Elijah in the book of Matthew: 11:14?

sure i knew it became contained in the former testomony. Who or the position did you listen that tithes had something to do with our sins. Giving tithes is going decrease back to the former testomony even as Genesis 14:20 even as Abram gave a 10th of each and everything to Meslchizedek. that's giving a 10th decrease back to God it extremely is a small part of the total advantages he has given us. that's unhappy that you want to curve issues round and attempt to make it artwork on your pretend faith. i'm no longer efficient what 1/2 of the belongings you're even keeping.

Malachi is talking about how families will be united when the Messiah comes. Compare to what Jesus says:

"I came to set sons against their fathers, daughters against their mothers, daughters in-law against their mothers-in-law. For I came to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law."
(Matthew 10)
