People get depressed occasionally and it's NORMAL. It passes and you go on.
When you can't shake it or you get depressed REGULARLY you probably need to look into it.
Go to a counslor first and they will talk to you. If they think you are clinically depressed you'll be referred to a shrink who will start giving you meds. It takes a while to find the right one and the right dose but it can free you from feeling horrible all the time.
You KNOW when you feel bad from a cold don't you? Depression's the same but you might not recognize that it's chronic unless you've been to a counselor. Being depressed feels bad no matter "what you think" and thinking about it doesn't change what it is.

If anything, clinical depression is overdiagnosed (for those who seek treatment, anyway). Anyone who thinks they may be depressed can get treatment. For the most part, those who are depressed know it, but some would rather face their problems on their own, as opposed to having to take medicine and/or see a shrink. I guess it's pride.
My basic rule to tell if you have depression: envision a piece of paper. Draw a line in the middle of it, then chart your average highs and lows. If your highs are only slightly above the middle, and you have very deep lows, or if there are extremely few highs and a whole lot of lows, you're probably depressed enough to need to seek treatment.

Yes, yes, many times depression will sneak up on you. sometimes, you just loose interest in the things that you used to like to do. You may not be able to get to sleep. Feeling sad for a long amount of time, even if it not severe, can be depression.
Like I said it can sneak up on you slowly. This can be caused by stress in your life or something like a chemical imbalanced. If the stress is something you are dealing with and you have unresolved past issues that are still going on....it can really get you down. do a search on depression on the net. The websites will tell you symptoms.
As for getting it to go away is not as easy. Try and reduce the stress in your life. Get at least 8 hours of sleep, it really helps alot. And exercise helps tremendously. it reduces stress also. If you feel you need some quiet time from being overwhelmed, do some meditation. It is as simple as sitting in a quiet place and clearing your mind of all things, even a few minutes helps. So if you are not feeling to bad right now, try these things. If you are feeling bad enough that you might hurt yourself, that is to much to handle by yourself, please go to a doctor.

You know it. You become less interested in things you used to be and it bothers you. If you are depressed, go do something that makes you laugh. If it still doesn't work, go exercise doing something fun, like swimming or biking. The endromorphines will help you. And, if that still doesn't work, then go see a doctor. There are some good meds that will help you through all this.

The depression usually will stop a person from wanting to do things and they will usually sleep for an over the normal time for their age, any age. They are not the life of the party. They are not that active. They are usually only involve with themselves.

Read William Styron and the DSM. Sit still several times and the answer will come naturally. Learn to meditate and watch how the mind keeps trying to stay busy. If you are depressed it may be shouting and/or whispering not-so-niceties at you (like some kinda demon). Watch, watch, watch it....constant vigilance.

The first few times I've been depressed, no. You don't know what's going on. Once you've been through it a few times, you do start to realize it when it's happening. However, it does take a while sometimes.

Sometimes you are suddenly not yourself, and you realize it. Other times it's a gradual decline, and it becomes part of who you are, and you don't. I think you realize it more and more after you start to get better, and think "Wow, that really sucked. How could I've let it go on like that?"
