My son is 9 and told me he would like his room to look like he's living underwater and his bed to be like a submarine he can "hide" in. He's going away for 3 weeks and we want to surprise him when he gets home. Any ideas how to make this happen on a very tight budget? He already has a blue carpet...

get some paints and paint the walls with fish and other sea creatures...maybe a submarine looking spot in one area to set his bed and a canapy thing on top to enclose it...how about a rotating lampshade of some kind to give the room the feel of moving water and there are some really cool clock radios that have preset sounds in them with ocean and waterfall sounds...maybe even invest in a fish tank with some live buddys for him to observe... try looking up a disney website with some colorful pictures to grab inspiration from for your artwork..good luck!!!

I agree with many of the other people who answered, that you should paint sea creatures on his walls. I'm not sure that you should paint the walls blue since he already has a blue carpet. try adding in blue wavey lines (make them look tame waves) in and around the sea creatures, thus you have the idea that his walls are the ocean without the work and money of painting them entirely blue. If your artistic talent doesn't include drawing and painting sea animals, you can always find pictures of fish, sea horses, ells, mermaids, whatever blow them up to what ever size you want and dacoupage them on to his wall.
As for the submarine... maybe try getting three hula hoops, cut them in half attach a gray or yellow (or whatever color you think he would like his boat to be) sheer material to the hula hoops leaving it to drape over the end on one side. Cut or just paint port holes on the sides of the ship. On the end that the material does not drape attach that to the front of his bed at the wall with nails or whatever you deem appropreate. Make sure to add kid friendly ties to hold the ship in its folded postion, which he can untie at anytime so he can go into his ship.
I hope this all makes sense and it helps a little!

Paint his walls an aqua blue color, any store will mix paint until you get the color you like. Paint fish, seaweed, and coral over the blue.

To make his bed a submarine, you can usually buy canopies (basically just mosquito nets with a fancy name, hehe) of different colors at home decorating stores (Pier 1, etc...) for about $15, get a yellow one. You can hang it from a hook in the ceiling above his bed, then make "windows" made of just cardboard cut out in a circle with a hole in it (basically an O shape) and paint the cardboard silver. Pin the windows around the "submarine."

At Wal-Mart, you can buy little toy fish and other sea creatures for about $1 each. Get a few of those, tie fishing line to them, and hang them from his ceiling.

You can also consider buying one of those lamps that spins around and projects sea creatures on the walls. Those are really neat.

Paint the Walls and the roof too. Then you can buy some basic bright colored paints at any craft store and paint some fish, octopus, sharks, and other creatures on the walls. If you don't feel that artistic, then coral reefs and bubbles are very easy to paint. You might also paint some of his furniture and glue things like shells and starfish to it. You can even find decorations that have fake swimming fish inside at places like Wal-Mart.
