I'm thinking of the jigsaw puzzles with about 6 big pieces. Are they usually for kids a little older, or is she at a good age for them now?

Thanks to everyone. There are so many great answers that it'll be hard to pick just one! I hadn't even thought of the little wooden puzzles! I'll be getting her one asap! :D

She won't have the fine motor skills yet for a jigsaw. Buy the wooden ones with the handles, that's what they start them off with in therapy for kids with developmental delays, because it's easier for them, yet helps them develop the pincer control at the same time. She is the perfect age to start those! Let her look at them first, then take out one piece at a time and have her try to put it back. After she's tried, but before she gets frustrated, take her hand and help her turn the piece to fit (called hand over hand). When she can easily do one piece at a time, then take the pieces out and set them right next to the spot it goes in, and just keep working with her on it, she'll get the hang of it. The BEST toys for helping kids develop normally is puzzles, blocks (she should be able to stack 3-4 at this age), picture books, and shape sorters. They have fun and don't even know it's important for them!

Sure, my kids loved puzzles at a young age too! Just make sure the pieces are big enough and sit back and watch. Nothing better than watching them put things together, even @ her age if she doesnt do it right, she will feel like she is doing a good job!!! Take pictures and have fun!!!!

Get the puzzles that are made for toddlers and babies with the little pegs. They are usually made out of wood so slobber won't hurt them.

Sounds great, as long as the pieces will not fit in his/her mouth, and you are willing to supervise. Try to find the wooden ones where pieces are matched into recessed spots, instead of him/her trying to deciper missing pieces.

No, that is not too young. Get them started now, and do them with your child. That is an excellent skill to begin at any age.

no, they aren't too young at all. puzzles are excellent for brain development and it's never too early to start with problem solving skills. it's not going to hurt them and you can really only win.
