Dont you find it hypocritical when someone says their dog is stupid, and yet the dog can understand our language but the owner cant even interpret the most obvious signals the dog is giving them?? I mean dogs do have body language after all why is it that people dont realize how amazing it is that a dog can learn the meaning of hundreds of words? and why cant most people understand more canine body language? I had a lady come up to my fence and try to pet my dog even though he was growling and barking in her face (clearly saying stop or I will bite you in dog language) and she totally didnt get what he was trying to convey to her and would have been bitten if I hadnt told her what he was trying to communicate.

hey boober....how do you know what the word sit means??? well because you associate that particular sound with the action of sitting. and how did you first learn what it meant? by your parents physically demonstrating the action while saying the word (which is just a sound) until you learned to associate that action with that word or sound. So you learned the meaning of sit the exact same way a dog did and yet you claim they dont actually uderstand the meaning of the word. Right now if when you were young your parents had said "tis" for example when teaching you how to sit, you would know the meaning of it and to you it would mean what sit means to everyone else. The fact is any word or sound can have any meaning we ascribe, so dogs only know whatever words or sounds that we have showed them the meaning of and they can also learn that gestures mean certain things for example my dog knows the verbal command for all his tricks AND a gestural command meaning the same thing.

However dogs need no instruction to understand the meaning of our body language because to them that is the normal way of communicating and they are very good at it.

Humans are arrogant and think that they are "beyond" animals in terms of communication. We have become so word oriented that we forget about expression, energy, body positioning, and the "feel" we present.
Some people never learn simply because they've never slowed their minds down long enough to feel what goes on between them and their environment. Once shown, however, many people do get it and really are changed forever by becoming more intune. Others never get it at all.
Great book by the way for those who get "it" about animals or who at least want to is A Kinship with All Life. Excellent!

I think the reason is based purely on needs. We humans do not need dogs to understand us, to enhance our existence, but dogs truly do need humans and are keyed in on our verbal and non-verbal communication in the most intense way. To get any of their needs met, they are totally reliant on us. I believe that the dog's entire universe which is simply eating food, pooping, playing, and being loved is completely dependent upon his master. So, a dog knows from a very young age that if he wants to get anything, he has to learn to walk the walk and talk the talk.
I don't think it is a matter of people not understanding dogs. I think we can understand dogs just as well as they understand us, even though we do not have the day to day motivation to focus that they may have. We may not be as cute and cuddly, but (most of us) do have greater intelligence. And finally, I think that that lady was just plain old stupid!

Dogs don't really understand the words we say. They understand the energy we are putting out more than anything. The can be trained to react a certain way when we give them a certain command. Like sit or stay. But they really don't know what the word means.

People often don't take the time to realize that animals are communicating with them.
My dog has different barks that mean different things to me. My cat also meows in a different way to express different things.
I'm not always 100% right in understanding them-- but usually I can figure it out if I look around.

not hypocritical, just ignorant. Some dogs bark when THEY want attention.
and it's not language that the dog is responding to, it's vocal intonation, and HUMAN body language that the dog is responding to.

I really think any animal lover would agree, you know when your dog is "telling" you that he has to go outside and pee.
