I am a first time mother so I was wondering if all first time moms do this or is it just me. My daughter is 6 months old (on Thursday) and I am constantly cleaning her off...if she gets food, dirt, slobber, etc...I am grabbing a rag and cleaning her. Everybody is always saying things like "let her be a baby" "stop that" let her get dirty" etc.... Am I being extreme or do all moms do this?

I don't think I am cleaning her to much...I mean I let her eat and make her mess then clean her...I just don't like it when we are out somewhere and she gets messy then thats when I am constantly cleaning her and stuff like that...I will be 27 in August.

Honey your doing a great job! Especially at 6 months, they don't know they are dirty on the face or the butt. THEY ARE BABIES. I don't know how old you are, but you seem very responsible!!! If I was your Mom, I would be proud and tell you "Your doing a great job and your a great Mom!!"

I agree with Ryan's Mom, there are scientific studies available that over-hyfgenic living can actually have a detrimental effect on a child's long term immune health, increasing the likelyhood of things like asthma and allergies!

I think it's important to let kids get messy when they are exploring, though there is no need to leave them messy for hours at a time or anything. They do need a chance to be kids and discover tactile experiences, as the little scientists that they are, but no one needs to be caked in dirt 24-7. It's all about being reasonable and moderate, being an extreme neat freak offers no benefits to your child.

I had my daughter when I was 20 and believe me, I was the same way. I freaked out over every little think that my daughter touched and if she got dirty. I would suggest you let her play and get dirty, it isn't going to hurt. There will come a day when she she will only want to be clean (about age 6). I think it is gross when moms let their kids run around dirty with food stuck on them, ewwwww! I think you are doing a great job, dont let what other people say bother you.

I'm guessing your mom did the same thing. I figure that because apparently my mom did. Now that I have 2 of my own, they constantly get cleaned up. I can't stand dirty babies. I think it's disgusting when people don't wash their kids up. Not all mom's do this, but the ones that don't like our kids being dirty do it...lol

florida, a bath every 2-3 days? nasty. I bathe my kids at least twice a day and they're 1 and 2

Hi there, I am a mother of four. 17,13,13, and 5. I get disgusted with parents who allow their babies to go around smelling like rotten formula, etc. It gathers under their necks, and causes a rash. Also, the crud that accumulates between their fingers and toes, etc. I always wiped mine down daily at least once, and bathed them every 2 to 3 days, when they were that age.

Don't listen to those other folks. When you baby gets older, she is going to get even messier, and then you don't have much control( I am talking about 2 years old and up). So, then you can let her be a kid and get dirty. By then, she will need a nightly bath. I have seen parents who let their kids get disgustingly dirty, and act like they don't care. I simply call that filth.

Do what feels right to you, and forget about the wayward comments.
Good luck

There is nothing wrong with what you are doing. No matter what you do people will be commenting on it when it comes to your child. It's always amazed me that anyone who had a child or has ever just been around children think their experts on everyone elses baby. Would you feel comfortable walking around with food or slobber on your face all the time? Well your baby probably doesn't either. Besides your teaching your daughter hygiene. What's wrong with that? Keep doing what you feel is right - not what others tellyou to do.

You're doing a great job. It really bothers me to see messy children. I always make sure my kids are clean. If my son is outside playing and gets dirty, I change him. I never have let my son have food on his face etc. Keep up the good work!!!

Bless your heart. It is a mother's never-ending struggle to keep their children clean! I'm the mom of a 9 yr old and a 3 month old and my mother-in-law thinks I'm crazy too but I don't care. Just because they're going to go get dirty again is no reason not to instill good hygeine in them while they are young. If you use that reasoning, there's no sense washing your clothes or dishes either. I can't stand having my kids look like raggamuffins!

You are being a good mommy! Don't worry about it! lol It's not extreme until you clean them so much they chaffe or get sore from it! I keep my kids clean too. I can't stand when my children look filthy like I don't care about them!

To each their own... but I like my kids clean! :)

You will find though that there will be times you can't keep them clean... just let them get messy and clean up afterwards... like playing in the mud etc.

No you are not cleaning her to much. Let her play but there is no reason to leave dried oatmeal on her. Let her have fun but you don't want her to look like a ragamuffin. Your doing a great job so keep up the good work. Don't worry so much about what other people think.
