It kind of depends, doesn't it?

If, for you, the consequences of honesty (and the way you choose to express it) outweigh what you reasonably stand to lose (or may have to put up with) for *not* being honest, then, ultimately, pretending may be better for you.

Conversely, if you're a terrible liar, the other person may feel patronized and react accordingly. Or perhaps "living a lie" puts so much stress on you that you that you end up resenting the person you're lying to and destroying the friendship/relationship anyway--so maybe you should consider your limits first and be honest. (As has been pointed out, the *way* in which you are honest can make a big difference--"Your shoe collection is stupid!" is different from "So, nice weather eh? Maybe we can go for a walk now?")

It's a question of opportunity cost: Is it worth it to *you* to create a pleasant fiction?

You might be happier if you did pretend. Something might surprise or interest you. And just for listening you'll seem interesting. Make the most of any situation.

If you care about the person who is telling you about it, you should at least be courteous.

my advice is to be honest and be YOURSELF, if youre not intrested in something just tell the other person, they will understand.
