It is rude. People are trying to keep their options open & not commit until they see what the best thing going that day is.
Also, people forget a lot now, I noticed.
Finally, they are too embarassed to say they are not coming.
RSVP folks!!!

There is a new trend of "Regrets Only" where guests only contact you if they cannot attend the event. Sadly, people have either mixed this up with RSVP (where a response of SOME sort is expected) or they have just gotten so lazy that they don't care.
I swear, one of these days I'm going to purposely not buy enough food for a party when people aren't responding. If anyone complains, I'll just tell them that I as far as I knew, there weren't that many people coming. (Besides, the people who are kind enough to respond are usually the ones who are on time.)

It is frustrating. Today it seems that people are getting lazier and lazier when it comes to etiquette.
RSVP is still appropriate and should still be honored.
I think that as our society slides more into the casual mode, the formality gets lost. Parents don't teach their kids, they expect schools to do all the work from teaching kids about morals, sex and behavior to computers, english and science.
The only recommendation I have is to call those non RSVPers who just show up and ask them if they plan to attend. I know it is more of a hassle, but then at least you'll know. Or put a note that you will only have limited seating and anyone not responding by X date will be turned away at the door.

It can't always be because it's from the French. RSVP carried into English and it should be common knowledge. When I send out emails to my friends about an upcoming to-do I come up with expressive ways to threaten those who do not respond, all in English...
And they STILL leave me hanging! O_o

I intend to RSVP but sometimes I just forget. Or I lose the invitation with the phone number and can't call!

You need to make it easier if you want a response. I don't always respond because it isn't convienient right away then I forget.
The best response is to put a label on the alcoholic drinks. The ones who don't respond always drink more of those.

Ghetto!!! I hate when people do that, but you know some times you just have to put your foot down, serve those who RSVP'd first and if there is room for the none RSVP'ers let them if not, tell them see ya!!!

What do you expect? Americans hate all things French.
"Repondez, s'il vous plait!" ("Answer, if you please.")
Try asking in English. ^_^ (Then again, most Americans wouldn't know that RSVP *is* French....)

Maybe the people you send them to don't know what it means?
Maybe RSVP (French for respond please) is outdated.
