My husband's favorite single malts are (please forgive the spelling)

Laphroig and Tamdhu. He also likes Lagavullin but I'm not sure if that is considered islay.

My bf says he really likes Oban and Laphroaig--both well under $300 - about $40. Its hard to discern differences at that level, and not sure if you'd be able to taste the difference b/t $40 and $300 bottle. Do a blind taste to check :-)

I'd go with the Laphroaig. It has a very strong peaty flavor which can take a little getting used to, but you'll find yourself coming back to it.
