When the book first came out, the author presented it as a work of fiction, but by all appearances upheald his conclusions about Jesus, Mary Magdalene, the Holy Grail, etc. This sparked some conflict among historians and theologian due to the fact that his scholarship is faulty.
As for why it infuriated so many Catholics, I think people found it to be disrespectful, especially to the Catholic Church. The book makes the church out to be this centuries old evil conspiracy. Granted, the hierarchy/administrative body of the church hasn't always been pristine over the years, but many people found the attitude in the book to be insulting.
Other Christians who were upset about the book hold their beliefs very dear. There are people who just cannot see Jesus as the Son of God and our Savior as a man who could have had sexual intercourse. Also, the idea of Jesus having any offspring raises a multitude of theological questions.
(btw, when did the pope do WHAT to the author?? I don't remember the pope saying anything on the subject; some other high ranking Vatican officials spoke out against the book, but I don't think John Paul II or Benedict XVI said anything more than for people to not take the book as fact.)

Goes only to prove that the novel is a truly successful work of art !
Theodore Adorno, the eminent German sociologist, and philosopher, has said : 'A successful work of art is not one which resolves contradictions in a spurious harmony, but one which expresses the idea of harmony negatively by embodying the contradictions, pure and uncompromised, in its innermost structure.'
From such an unbiased viewpoint, Dan Brown' novel has really scored over its critics !

Its media hype. Lifeway or somebody figured out they could sell books if they were about "Cracking the DaVinci Code", and so they did a big marketing push, and we all know the story from there.

In the fist page of the book, it says that all the arts descriptions, buildings, documents (like the "Less Dossiers Secrets") and secret rituals on this novel, are true.
