Your work will consist of some of the following steps
1) developing requirements:
a) what's my problem/what do I need to solve
b) how can this be solved
c) how do I solve this
2) creating a design plan
3) developing the software
4) testing it...probably doing back to step 1
Note, this isn't everything. I've left a lot of stuff out. You will need to be able to communicate clearly with your customers/boss, so that requirements and design implementations are translated properly. Software construction is only a small portion of what you do. Documenation is the largest part. You will write documents for quite some time ( assuming you have the communication skills and WANT to move up ). Documentation can include the above, in addition to source code comments.
I won't go into all of the details, rather, the above is meant to give you a tiny portion of what we do as software developers. Communication is key. Structure is key. Writing code is key, but writing code won't open all of the doors.
