Pit Bulls are not born mean. Most will aggressively protect their owners. That is the breed. It is in their bloodline. Pit Bulls can be mean if taught or treated so. Be careful in choosing a dog for a pet. Do some research first. Remember a dog is an animal and sometimes do not know right from wrong. It would be the owners fault for anything the pet does. I would not own a Pit Bull. I have heard too many reports of these dogs being put to sleep for something that they were bred to do. I t would be like trying to keep a beagle from barking and hunting. It is not fair to the dog. It does not make the dog mean. Be an educated owner

No. It is how they are raised. Pit Bulls get thought to be mean, because they have an amazing lock on their jaw, making them good fighting dogs. Now i own a few pit bulls, and out of all of them, only one of them is mean. But you know the law, when a pit bull is rescued from an environment, where they have been fighting, they are put to sleep. this pit bull i had got was a puppy and had already been fighting. i took him from my friends friends house, because the owner was fighting him. Later i heard, they owner got busted for dog fighting. Long story short. I have 4 pit bulls. 3 are nice, 1 is misbehaved. the one that is misbehaved, started fighting at a young age, and it has made him the dog he is now. I have 3 females all from the same litter that are so sweet. They are as sweet as a golden retriever. They are well trained. Never had a case of barking at another dog or biting somebody. But the male shows agression towards other dogs. Anyways. No pit bulls are not born misbehaved, its the owners responsibility.

My own pit bull was absolutely the 'sweetest dog in the world', until he attacked and nearly killed my 3 year old daughter. (unprovoked)
My friend and neighbor's pit bull attacked her and mauled her leg, just because she told him "No, go lay down" when he was begging at the table.
My friend's pit bull attacked him while he was feeding him.
I work at a boarding/day care kennel. We have only 3 pit bull clients. None of them can be allowed to play with the other dogs, as they are always looking for a fight. These dogs are owned by the outstanding citizens of our town, who care enough to put them in day care while they work.
ALL of these were responsible owners, with well trained "sweet" pit bulls.
My friends run a pit bull rescue and show UKC pit bull's and poodles. (she is a pit bull judge) They came home from a trip to the grocer's to find 3 poodles dead, and 1 wounded. The pit bulls were all bloody and happy.
Yes, many pit bulls are and stay wonderful pets. But many of them do not... I will never trust another.
Just look at the asker's questions for a couple of days. So many are about a dog aggressive pit bull, and how to make them not kill the other dogs, or tear the fence down trying to get at people and dogs, etc.

Pit Bulls are very intelligent and very energetic and very, very inquisitive. They can make delightful pets, but they do tend, because they're big and enthusiastic, easily cause distress to other dogs and humans, whether they're "mean" or not. As far as being vicious, that's always because they've been mistreated. Their natural aggressiveness does demand a good amount of disclipline and training to keep them from causing problems with other dogs and people, but don't mistake that aggressiveness for the dog being "mean". Really, in most cases they're just being a dog. Barking, bedevilling smaller critters, leaping at people is what dogs do, unless taught otherwise. My last dog weighed twelve pounds, so when she leapt up on you, it was only mildly annoying. When the neighbor's rottewiler did the same, it hurt simply because he was so much bigger...and no, he wasn't a mean dog either. Again, a mean pit bull is that way because someone mistreated him/her.

Pit Bulls are not born mean. They're just what they are, Pit Bulls.
They have a tendency to be animal aggressive and only an idiot would leave one loose with another animal. But animal aggression and human aggression are two very different things and you can't compare them.
A lot of training and socialization will help them become wonderful family pets.

Pitbulls ARE NOT MEAN... They get a bad rap because of those owners who raise them improperly and in a cruel manner.... If you ask anybody who has ever had a pitbull as a pet... 100 percent of them would tell you that they are sweethearts and loving animals.. The people who say pitbulls are killers are those who have never had them and heard grapevine stories..
I have 2 pit bulls... age 2 and 4... and My fiance raised them with me to be the most loving and compasionate dogs you will ever meet.... Every time we come home its like the first time they have ever seen me... they shadow us and do nothing but lick everything and anybody they meet.... Dont beleive the tales and just ask people who ACTUALLY have had pits as pets...
GOOD LUCK

The original pitbull lines were bred for dog fights. The breeders would actually put down any puppies who showed signs of fear or agression towards people. They actually are very people oriented and will more likely lick you to death than hurt you. They do have a tendancy to be dog agressive because of the original breeding purpose. The breed has unfortunatley changed a lot since the original bloodlines and people now breed them for the wrong traits. If you reaserch the history of the bred you will find that a lot has been changed, size.temperment. That is not the dogs fault

It's the owners and nothing else. I am speaking from experience. When I grew up we always had pitbulls... and different kinds for that matter. There was SIX of us kids, and we were never once bit or anything. We knew how to treat them right and they never showed any aggressiveness. Because so many people raise them to fight, it gives all of the dogs a bad name. The stories where they say "The dog just snapped and ate someone" is total bullshit. Nonaggressive dogs do not act that way.

All the pit bulls I've known have been really sweet... The one dog I've been attacked by was a golden retriever... lol, it's definitely the owner.

IT is the owners, undoubtedly, the breed may be a bit aggressive, but I've seen more sweet pit bulls than nasty ones
