Sodas are just plain bad for teeth, regardless of whether you have braces on or not. Diet or regular, because they have sugar and or acids that can break down the enamel and cause decay. Some people have the bacteria in their mouths that cause this, and some people don't. So it is a good thing to switch to water. Be sure to brush well, very very well. Think about sucking on xylitol mints, this is a natural sweetener that helps reduce cavities by not allowing the bacteria to attach to your teeth. Now and when you get your braces off you can chew xylitol gum too. This should be one of the first 3 ingredients to have an effect and you must do this for 5 minutes at least 3 times a day. It will start 'working' in a week or two but is important to continue. This will reduce decay but cant ever completely prevent it.
Anything in moderation is OK (well legal things anyway) so a soda once in awhile is fine. Just remember to brush well and it is best to rinse with water after eating or drinking anything.
Good Luck with the braces!! Be sure to make friends with a proxabrush!(ask you orthodontist)

You can drink soda when you have braces. It will not hurt them. I've had braces for about 6 months now and my braces are fine even though I drink soda.

Well I did not give up soda and I drank it right out the can. You just have to brush your teeth really well, maybe after the soda if you are worried. But that was me.

I had them for 4 year. They are painful at first and when ever you have a new procedure done. I would suggest you take a pain pill before you go have them put on. And make sure you get lots of wax from the orthodontist till you learn how to talk with them on. Otherwise you will slice your lips up. LOL I talked like that for a couple months after I got mine off. It really showed off my teeth lol. Beside that do what the orthodontist tell you to do, he knows what he is doing.

i have braces right now. they're not that bad at all actually. you get used to them after about a week. i suggest that you take an advil or something like that before you go & get them on & make sure that you eat something before you go. your teeth will be sore for about a weekish or so.. nothing to worry about though =]
i wish you the best of luck with everything. soda dosen't do anything nor does gum or anything like that just to let you know.

Though to be honest, I am not very certain of what type of braces you are gunning for.

I had braces for years, and I never listened to my orthodontist... Take what you will from this.

Though the only problem with me not listening was that it took an eternity for me to get them off. Best to just listen to what he says and book regular appointments to get them tightened and adjusted so they come off quickly.

All orthodontists are different in their own ways, if you want to drink soda though, go straight ahead... just make sure to brush and floss regularly.

Consider white strips when they come off, if you need them of course.

I have braces and am 11 (you can tell by the name). I have drank as much soda as I usually do and nothing has happened yet. I always drink it through a straw.

use a straw i had them for 2 years. Always brush you r teeth beneath the braces or they will hurt when they tighten them. Never chew gum unless it is juicy fruit because it dissolve to whee it will not get stuck after it in there long enough.

i'm 30 and just got my braces off in march. i had them on for 2 years. i drank diet soda all the time. my ortho never said anything about soda. i think as long as you keep up on your brushing and flossing, you should be ok.

When I had braces nobody told me anything about soda... though the carbonic acid in soda will leach calcium from your teeth and the sugar will promote decay...
