Why is it that when men donate sperm we get a hand-shake (no pun intended) and a thank you. But when women donate eggs, they get upwards of $10,000 per donation?

There can only be two possible reasons. Either eggs are rarer than sperm, or that there is more of a demand for eggs than there are for sperm.

It cannot possibly be that eggs are rarer than sperm because 10,000 sperm (1 normal dose) are introduced to 1 egg to concieve. But during egg donation, over a dozen eggs are produced and donated. So for every single egg donation, 12 men must donate sperm. Obviously sperm is 12 times rarer than eggs.
Surely, how can eggs be more in demand if sperm is needed 12 times more? Even if my numbers are wrong, how can someone justify paying around $10,000 for something that is just as nessisary as sperm when sperm doesn't get anything?

If eggs are niether rarer or more needed than sperm, then why aren't sperm donors paid the same amounts as egg donors?

first off men have an infiant supply of sperm. Secondly women are born with some many eggs and lose one every ovulation and never creates more ( menopause is when we run out) Secondly is a major proceedure for a women to go through, when with men, its often fun. I know several places that pay men a hundred or so bucks for their sperm. Also with artifical insimunation(sp?) it only take one living sperm not the typical amount. they inject the sprem right into the egg, wheras with you you have to hope the sprems make it to the egg and the hope one can penitrate it.

Men do get paid for sperm donations; the procedure, as you may know, is quite pleasurable and not aggravating for a donor.
Egg donation is much more complicated. Before donation, women need to take special hormones for weeks enhancing egg production; then egg extraction follows, which is a painfull surgical procedure. No wonder it is compensated better.

Egg donation involves a painful procedure that requires medication, treatments and a lot of time to get. Also a woman is only born with so many eggs in her body. 1 egg per millions of spem per ejaculation. It's the simple equation of supply and demand!

Its not that sperm are more rare, it's that they are less effective at their job. Ideally one sperm and one egg would do the job, but instead it takes thousands (usually much more) stupid sperm to fuse with one egg. Your logic is totally faulty, we're born with all the eggs we're ever going to have and release one a month until menopause (you do the math), and you produce 50 billion a year...

Also important is that it is very invasive to get a women's eggs outta her, for a man, well we all know how easy that is...

its because there is probably more men donating the sperm. not alot of women want to donate them. but if they see they'll get 10,000 $ then more might be donating. plus some of the eggs may not be good enough to use.

I disagree...eggs are more rare then sperm...cuz we will continue to create sperm...but women have a limited amount of eggs they have and will have. Thus once you run out menopause...the amount of little guys i will make are endless...i got a sperm making factory...but you ladies...you will never have more eggs then you currently have...so use them wisely ;-)

Getting sperm from you is not an invasive procedure...
Getting viable eggs from her is.
