I'm a waitress. Tracts frequently get left along with tips. I'm always glad when I receive them, but not because they're so life-changing. It's because I'm a Christian. I grew up in church and I know the people who leave them mean well. When my co-workers receive them, it doesn't have a positive effect on them. But they are very ineffective today. Most of the time all they get is a snicker out of the people who receive them. They're also so vague. When you boil them down, all they do is say "pray and ask Jesus in your heart". But thats not what becoming/being a Christian is about at all. It's life and trust and love and so much more. You can't even begin to package that in a tiny piece of paper. A personal relationship is what it takes, not Christianese on a colorful sheet.

I was in a park once and some bikers came riding in, they sat a bench and opened bibles and read them for awhile. Later they handed us some tracts that were really good. Homelessness can make you lonely and depressed at times. It is always a good thing when you get a lift from the Lord. That is what happened that day for my family and I. So yes, tracts do help, at times.

No, in my experience, all they do is turn people off. They typically come off high-handed and superiuor or they are openly derogatory, threaten the non-believer with hell and damnation and make grossly inaccurate assumptions about people of other religions. Chick tracts are the worst offenders of all.
I'm not Christian (hence my username), but I'd be more inclined to listen to a Christian who not only *practiced* love, tolerance, honor and respect than one who shoves a religious tract in my hand while screaming at me so vehemently, they spray me with spittle. (Yes, it has happened - during a daytime trick or treat session no less!)

I have to admit that I have, and in a positive way. I don't recall which one in particular. I know that when I am ready to hear something...that something finds its way to me. I have had that happen with Jehovah's Witness Booklets, and some other religions. I don't think it matters what reigion it is, it's the message that is important. I think the most powerful message behind all of them is to have faith that someday we will find out what this life was all about.

They are an excellant tool to distribute the gospel. We just sow the seed. It is God that gives the increase.
1Cr 3:6 I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.

Part of the problem is that I get someone's "interpretation" of what they mean, instead of allowing me to make my own conclusion.
