There is something admirable about the way people from countries that we would consider backward, underdeveloped, third world and, on first impression, some of the worst places on earth, show such love and pride for their homeland. It's hard to imagine that anyone who has made the decision to leave their home and move to another country could hold their place of origin in such high regard. After all, if they had so much love for their homes in the first place, then why did they leave them?
To appreciate their points of view, you have to understand why they left in the first place. Poverty, lack of employment and persecution persecution because of religious or political differences are strong motivators to push someone to make the drastic decision to leave their place of birth and migrate to another land. Other reasons include lack of educational opportunities, prevalence of disease and lack of medical resources, governmental oppression and environmental dangers.
America's history is filled with extra-cultural expression. Our language, arts, innovations, and governing concepts are all variations of, or inspired by, imported traditions. It only makes sense, since America was founded by immigrants. We are all, save for Native Americans, immigrants or descendants of immigrants.
There are no larger examples of Americans celebrating their cultural heritage than our holidays. Christmas, St. Patrick's Day, Cinco de Mayo, Bastille Day and Chinese New Year all originated somewhere else. If you take a look at the 'Weekend' or 'to do' section of your local newspaper, it is probably filled with heritage festivals, exhibits and programs celebrating diverse cultures. Several larger cities have a 'Chinatown', 'Little Italy' or 'Germantown' named for the cultural group that settled there in the building of America.
'Flag waving' is a celebration of the spirit and history of a people. For some it is the appreciation of the memory of their past. Others are honoring their heritage and traditions as part of their daily lives. There are still others that are longing for a chance to, one day, return to their homelands and, perhaps, will take an American flag with them.

I think one piece is that it's a matter of a feeling of belonging in a different environment. The US is incredibly different from most of the other countries in the world, and most of the time when people immigrate to the United States it's a violent culture shock. I think that flying a flag gives some people the feeling of home. A small place of familiarity in a foreign world. I don't think it's about what state their country is in, but more that that country is their home, and something as simple as flying a flag for their home country gives them a sense of pride and honor.

Just a thought.

P.S. Reading some of the answers above mine, I don't think you should post if you're just going to jab the person. It may not be the most lucid of questions but I see 5 answers above mine that don't help at all.

Maybe if our Army was home in America taking care of America problems, we could place a few Humvees on the border. Just a thought.

Get over the flag worship....geez why are people so obsessed with your flags? Its only a SYMBOL.....The way people rant about their flag you would think its a god or something. Its the message behind the flag, get over it if someone raises a flag....There are more important things in life then a freakin flag...
